A fourth month in a row of declining activity in the housebuilding sector

Construction slows for first time since 2001

“With the commercial property sector in dire straits and the housing market cooling markedly, there is a very real danger that the construction sector could be in for an extended hard time. This adds to the downward pressures facing the UK economy,” Howard Archer, of Global Insight said.

  • I learnt last night that a developer has just withdrawn planning application for 450 house development in Milton Keynes and English Partnerships will now be ‘re-marketing’ the land… Mmmm.

What, house building is not an attractive business anymore???!! But… I thought this isolated island had a shortage of supply… not enough space for inhabitants and enough Polish immigrants to support 10% HPI for ever?!

Could it be that the people who actually have to take some risks and invest some money, like the building sector, have done their homework and therefore come to a different conclusion than the gel-in-the-hair-and-mini-cooper-driving EA next door?

  • house builders are not slowing down. they have high fixed costs, they need to turn building sites around.
they would like us to believe they act as an OPEC-style cartel, but there is far too cheating to keep the cartel unity required to sustain house prices
The Times and other papers are just providing an useful medium to broadcast the builder’s cartel pipedream

keep on building, this is a small island, prices can only go up, professor nikel (a grand charlatan advisor to the builder association) said so

I know of a local company attached to the construction industry currently loosing about £100k per month. They’re trying to turn things around but I think it may be too late – sad really

  • A large house builder starting with ‘P’ shutdown 2 sites here in North Yorkshire in February only partly complete. Half the site has people in them , the other half is like a bomb site.
