Edmund Conway

Is it really too early to mention the 'C' word...?

Imagine you've just been asked by your husband or wife to cook the big roast lunch for your in-laws at their house in the country. Easy, you think. Then, with horror, you lay your eyes on their oven. It is a prehistoric model with a dicky door so difficult to open that you will only be able to get access to the furnace once at the start, to put the meat in, and once when it is time to take it out and carve it.

Ewwww. Well, the bank certainly failed to see any urgency – remember until last August they’d been sitting on their hands for a year making no changes. They acknowledged later that they were behind the curve on raising rates.

I think there’s quite a lot of catching up to do. And besides even if the housing market gets a temporary stay of execution, it’s in the post anyway. Buy now and watch the value fall. Simple as that.

If you put any store in the logic that August/November creates a slowdown in January/February then presumably January/April would manifest as a slowdown (or crash) in June/July.

I have an irrational feeling that summer could see things start to go and that by the end of the year HPC could be in full swing. However, pretty much everyone is wrong with predictions (except by accident) so I preemptively acqiuesce to flaming.
