BofE will say it’s not their fault

Bank of England Drafts First `Dear Gordon' Note:

Spoof draft of how a letter from Mervyn King to Gordon Brown might look. "Frankly, it's your own fault. If you'd let ME pick all of the economists for the Monetary Policy Committee, the external members wouldn't have been able to gang up on us in 2005 and get their way with that ridiculous interest-rate cut."

  • George Monsoon says:

    FANTASTIC!

And probably not as far detracted from the truth as you might imagine.

  • You never know. Apparently Dennis Thatcher used to say that life at No 10 closely mirrored that of Yes Prime Minister.

A better letter would include the reasons why interest rates had just risen to 8%.

  • maybe he held out on raising rates until his BTL property had achieved its unrealistic asking price, so the letter should include “Sorry for not rising rates sooner to control inflation, but my buyers were in a chain, and then someone went on holiday…you know what it’s like…anyway, I hope I haven’t things too late, otherwise we’re all f****”
