Freedom of Speech

Independent: Blair laid bare: the article that may get you arrested

In the guise of fighting terrorism and maintaining public order, Tony Blair's Government has quietly and systematically taken power from Parliament and the British people. The author charts a nine-year assault on civil liberties that reveals the danger of trading freedom for security - and must have Churchill spinning in his grave.

Today I had the sad misfortune to do business with UPS on mailing a box of some personnal effects to a relative in the USA who had just visited for six months and, having acquired a heavy dressing gown and a few jumpers to survive the Scottish winter, found it impossible to stuff everything back into two suitcases weighing not more than 50 pounds each. Jumpers, dressing gown, winter boots, assorted reading matter, greeting cards, outdated business. I loaded it all into a large box and rung the shipping company. I'd just survived the UPS agent's grilling -- how many centimers high, wide, long; my container or yours, and the rest, when I learned that the box must be kept open for the driver to inspect contents, the box will be X-rayed, so film unprocessed film or other media may be endangered. In addition, dogs will sniff this package [and hopefully that is all], so don't try to wiggle any doggie biscuits past the authorities I guess, unless you have declared them by means of a Manifesto, which shall specify where each item enclosed was manufactured, where is was acquired, why it was acquired, and at what expense, why it is now being shipped elsewhere and how it will be used when it gets there, along with other warnings about terrorism Acts and a whole host of business | could barely absorb with only my left ear. All of this information should be printed in block letters I was advised, or typewritten, and provided in triplicate please. And, if anything was found amiss by either the driver or at the depot later on when the box was scanned they could refuse to ship the package, charge me an unspecified additional amount, or probably things far worse than that. It was evidently possible that the jumpers and dressing gown would end up in the possession of someone at the UPS Depot who especially admired plaid and fancies fuzzy blue polyester in the boudoir. The woman's tone was beyond authoritative and I aborted the transaction with the decision, "Never mind, I'll manage this some other way." We all can expect to be making many similar baffling adjustments according to this ominous article by the Independent; and probably many of them will not be construed as amusing in any way.

I don't understand why we have to suffer when it is Blair that is the war criminal? How can he get away with the most heinous of crimes, and we can't even put stuff in the post anymore? Very unfair.

Everybody who values their freedom should be deeply alarmed at the on-going assault on our liberties by this Shady bunch of charlatons, and the Corporate elite that they represent.

However, it is asserted again here, that in some way this relates to some 'Marxist' plot. Could anybody explain for me just what on earth such policy has to do with the views of Karl Marx?

There is nothing at all of similarity between Marxist Ideology and the politics of New Labour, and yet this regular assertion into articles seems to be frequently made, and is never challenged or contested (paticularly in the liberal- left media)
