Gordon Brown Does Whatever Needs To Be Done

This must be the fastest U-turn by any Government.

I first heard about outsourcing the social payment scheme in bed this Sunday morning. By breakfast Vincent Cable was on the Marr program saying the scheme to charge poor people 28% interest on loans had been sneeked through Parliament without debate and on the same program Hague rubbed the Governments noses in it.

By lunchtime the government were announcing that it wasn't something they had intended to introduce and their preliminary discussions had been leaked out.

By the evening they were claiming that although it was not something that they ever had any plans to introduce they would in any case not introduce it because it might make them look bad in the opinion polls and hang around their necks like the fetid abolition of the lower rate of tax at the next election.

Oh and the article claims that Gordon Brown ordered ministers to abandon it yesterday. Strange how this information never came out on the Andrew Marr program

edited to add Gordon Browns lie

...wonder if the plan was to outsource the loans ...and if so to whom...?..can't see the Government administering loans....was someone due to make a killing....?.....if so who...?.... <_<

Actually the plan had much in its favour but it was the speed they dropped it and ran when they realised how it was going to look that was funny.

The current emergency loans are interest free and it was claimed this morning that people were abusing this (i.e getting a £200 loan and putting it on deposit at 0.05% and pocketing the difference).

The plan was to have credit unions administer it and they charge 2% per month. Better than a loan shark but not much. Brown was already being dubbed a loan shark and it didn't look good especially since Brown has been pressuring the banks to drop rates to borrowers.

I think Mandy had taken his eye off the ball for just one split second.

Alongside "it woz the tories wot did it", incompetence is becoming one of New Labour's favorite excuses.

"Oh we really thought he had WMD.. honest", "Oh we didn't mean to OK the raid on the opposition MP's home", "woops - we accidentally introduced a law", "oh we didn't mean to remove the 10% tax rate, here have some money".

'We accidentally jumped the gun on that press release about the knives.'

There should be plans to build a prison especially for Labour MPs and their associates.

Oops. Did I say that aloud?

Neil Kinnock was most adamant on the Andrew Marr programme that it would have absolutely zero chance of succeeding. When challenged by Hague on the issue, even the Welsh windbag was very anxious to scotch any rumours that it might happen. He obviously saw it as a huge embarrassment for the grubbyment and another gaffe by the otherwise untouchable Gordon who is doing such a stirling job steering us through the crisis.

...good point ....it highlights the financial illiteracy of this Government ....probably was about to be approved at the 2% figure by those people not fit to run a 'piggy' bank never mind a Treasury ...and failed to understand how 2% per month stacks on it's APR..... <_<
