Von Essen Hotels - Andrew Davis

Andrew Davis with his ever expanding luxury hotel empire has to be rather vulnerable to the coming downturn

"While groups or chains tend to buy properties with 50 rooms or more, give them a "look" (as Caroline fears for Grey Gables in The Archers) and operate centrally, von Essen buys hotels with as few as 11 rooms.

Each place becomes a limited company, paying rent to von Essen Hotels Ltd, which acts as landlord and watchdog.

It's ingenious: above the rent, the general manager controls his or her own finances. And, in the words of von Essen's director of operations, Nick Romano, "Should we stuff up, say, with Congham Hall, the whole group doesn't come down with it."

"Still, there are persistent rumours of slow paying (funnily enough, the taxi driver en route to Buckland mentioned it "

Strangely the rate of new acquisitions seems to have suddenly slowed down in 2008

I wonder how he plans to pay all that interest if one (or more) of those hotels goes through 'a bit of a quiet period' ?

maybe he plans to fall back on the helicopter business he runs in his spare time!
