Vaevictus
I like how you complain about the immigration problem in the UK, and are instead emmigrating to another country yourself :0) Good luck, moving out of the UK was the best thing I ever did - really opened my eyes! Every country has its shitty little quirks though, Belgium has its share! Be careful though and make sure you are hedged against any unexpected currency movements, I learned that the hard way! Prof
34 in a 30mph area ? How dare you ! You evil, despicable, nasty person. This country is better off without you. And let`s consider the fact that you sold your house. What`s wrong with you, man ? Why didn`t you take on a larger mortgage and buy somewhere bigger. No wonder there is a crisis in the mortgage market. People like you caused all of this. And as far as red tape is concerned, you must be imagining it. I`m sure Gordon said that he would reduce red tape and simplify the tax system for small businesses. Gordon wouldn`t let us down............ would he ? Good luck with the move anyway. steve99
You cant have much to moan about though, actually selling out at the top of the market, not many could time it that well, especially with Spain tanking at the same time but bigger. I suspect my wife and I are here till the bottom of the bottom, she is only just beginning to believe that prices are going down after 3 years of nagging from me, already 2003 prices around here. bagsos
Going to check out Australia next week, and may move if I like it. Met a mate on his annual UK visit last week who has been there 16 years and loves it. My partner lived there for 10 years and is now a citizen, and is saying she might not come back if she sees any jobs there.
Gormless Clown
HPC whinge Bingo ... I suppose you like the idea as it helps you to rise up in society by reducing the competition. Ruins it for the rest of us though. Just out of interest who will pay for your benefits when we are gone ?
Guest An Bearin Bui
probaly spain, we know some family there, plenty of english schools, and to be honest the schools here are so bad i could so a better job i reckon. We have thought about it for a fair while now, you only get one shot at life , 9-5 for the rest of my life to pay for a liitle box in a cold, damp country ruined through political correctness, immigration and a huge public sector of nitwits means we are off. sorry for the moan ! Er... you have heard about Spain's insane property bubble, haven't you? They have all the same problems Britain has and are recapitalising their banks as well. I don't know if Zapatero has been coming out with idiotic statements about Spanish house prices never going down and trying to fix the market there as well but considering that he is leader of the majority Spanish Socialist Workers Party, it's quite likely that his economic policies are similar to New Labour's. It's all good and well to talk about leaving Britain but I wish someone could point me in the direction of a developed country that hasn't had a housing/credit bubble and now has a credit crisis as a result. And before anyone says 'Germany' - they may not have had a housing bubble but they're getting all the downside now so they may as well have. (I've lived there already anyway and if people here think British taxation and red tape is bad, they wouldn't last 5 minutes in Germany!). bear_or_bull
The problem is, the debt madness is global. Australia today organised a 14k AU$ give away for FTBs to buy a new house. US? Spain? Anywhere? All the same mate.
Guest X-QUORK
Every now and again we get these "Goodbye, we're off to..." threads on HPC. Firstly, even Spain has the t'internet, so no need to say goodbye. Secondly, whoopy-f*cking-do. What do you want, some kind of frigging medal? Goodbye everyone, I'm off for a pi$$ in a minute. However, from my experience as a self-employed freelancer in both countries, the German Finanzamt always seemed somewhat more knowledgeable and helpful than the British Inland Revenue. Converted Lurker
I wish you well and is some respects admire your cojonas, but with all due respect your posts *read* kneejerk and appear to be a reaction to recent events. Grass isn't always greener etc. The UK has its faults but perhaps it mightn't be as bad, or harsh a place as we suspect when the inevitable recession bites. dredwerker
Uprooting your kids at such a crucial point in their education (especially your eldest) is not wise. Really - work hard at your gcses and what will you get - o nothing unless you get on reality tv. I am worried for my own daughter, as few parents on here mention they are thinking of re-educating their children to get up the duff and learn how to claim benefits. tongue in cheek - mostly - but its a scary thought I have come across people who earn £30k in council houses - how can most ftbs compete with that. Then these people get sold them in a 'right to buy' scheme and the council has a statutory right to buy another one for some other feckless bar steward. bye bye labour government <rant over>
Its time to buy
Good luck. Two of my friends have moved out there over a year ago, and are loving it. One is moving to Barbados in a week, no regrets. I'm not lucky enough to have the opportunity to move, so will be resigned in making best with with I've got. Spain maybe undergoing a bust, but they have a better community spirit to get out of any mess. Plus fewer pesky regulations.
Y-QUERK
Yeah UK sucks. Problem is so do a lot of other places, just for different reasons. Personally I wish people here wernt so miserable...grumble grumble... And during the "prospertiy" decade did people become nicer? Nope. So what are they going to be like during a severe downturn.... researchmug
I travelled around europe a couple of years ago and have to agree that Spain certainly doesn't have greener grass. I drove around Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Holland and Austria and didn't find a country I'd rather live in than Britain. I would recommend spending more than a few weeks in a place before deciding to uproot your family, perhaps a long holiday? Also what if your children decide to move back to the UK when they grow up? Will you be happy beingin a different country? After all cheap flights are coming to an end. My dad (also a businessman) toyed with moving to france. I just reminded him that there probably won't be an indian restaurant down the road or a pub with warm Marstons' Pedigree and he soon saw sense.
