Bosh
On any other day, this would have been front page headlines. The husband and wife MPs faced questions about the location of their second home, for which they have claimed tens of thousands of pounds of allowances. In a report today, the Commons Standards and Privileges Committee said: "The Commissioner has dismissed the complaint, having concluded, in the light of his investigation, that 'Ms Cooper and Mr Balls made reasonable decisions on the basis of their own circumstances in declaring their property in Castleford to be their main home'." The investigation by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, John Lyon, followed a complaint from Tory MP Malcolm Moss. It centred on the Cabinet couple's claims, totalling more than £24,000 in 2007/08, in second homes allowance for their London property. In a joint statement, Mr Balls and Ms Cooper accused Mr Moss of seeking to make political capital out of the complaint. "We welcome the Parliamentary Commissioner's decision to dismiss this complaint after a full investigation and his conclusion that we acted fully in accordance with both the letter and the spirit of the rules of the House," they said. http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/MPs-Expen...r_Investigation

detached
oink. The best we can hope for is that they loose their jobs at the next election and they collapse into negative equity. The couple, Schools Secretary and Chief Secretary to the Treasury respectively, had been accused of: "breaking the spirit or even the letter" of House of Commons rules by using their second-home allowance to help pay for a £655,000 house in north London. I reckon that they must a mortgage of more than £600/700K (London house + big house in Castleford). Won't be easy to service on two backbenchers' salaries ....... Tummybanana
Will not be easy to sell either without losing a fortune.......... Hang on, that's only £2,000 a month, or £1,000 each per MP; well within acceptable boundaries for a central London pad. Bearing in mind that they've actually been cleared, I think witch-hunting is a bit cheap.

Austin Allegro
Smacking children to leave a mark is outlawed today i think, though it had been on the cards since last year or so I think, so not sure if it's being 'buried' as such, but will certainly get less airtime. richc
oink. The best we can hope for is that they loose their jobs at the next election and they collapse into negative equity. Anyone wanna bet whether these two will join Tony Blair on the City's payroll after they're booted from government? Having syphoned off billions from taxpayers into the banks, and crippled the real productive economy in the process, they'll claim their payoff after leaving government by becoming investment bankers. The only reason for Mrs. Balls' current posting with the Treasury would seem to be to line her up for some sort of position with a bank after her stint in government. It clearly isn't due to any sort of ability, as her previous experience seems limited to screwing up the introduction of HIPS as housing minister.
