Jason
Hi, I'm asking this question for a friend, and it's something I would seriously consider in the future. If you have a lodger, how much can you receive before paying tax? Also, it would be easier to charge a fixed amount for bills, would this fixed cost have to reflect the true additional cost of household bills? I.e. why not charge £250 rent plus £100 for bills? It stood at £4,500 last year (£87 per week). I assume it changed in April 2008 to about £90 per week. "Rent A Room". Totally tax free. Yes, the charge for bills would have to reflect true useage, at no profit.
