Anyone Know Anything About Leek United Building Society?

Recommended Posts

Joined Leek United 10 years ago as I thought they were too small to be a target to be converted into a Bank, though someone did try unsuccesfully. I've taken half my savings out and put them in Nationwide. However I'm loathe to take all of them out as I've been saving with them for so long and think this will help when it comes to getting a mortgage in the future (if there is any money around by then for mortgages)

Anyway I wondered if anyone knew anything about the Leek United, good, bad or anything else? They did used to advertise Buy to let mortgages in their branches and on their website but I've no idea whar % of their loans this noxious business accounted for.

I think I've been with them for 20+ years (my mum opened a savings account there for me).

You normally get the annual accounts through from them, and I must admit this year was the first time I had read them for the same reasons as you've pointed out. Overall, i'm pretty sure it was all ok on the western front.

I've got £33k in there, just to be on the safe side

I'm a little peeved, I came off their 3 yr bond this yr and thought i wouldnt tie it up again just so i've got a bit more freedom and with interest rates going up thought it better to keep options open...but their interest rate on pyramid 90 is pretty poor. I can get even higher rates (6%) online with Barclays :o

Do you live in Leek or nearby?

Thanks for the replies.

I used to live in Tean, but I'm in Shrophire now, near Oswestry. I carried on with the Leek United because they were a small building society that had already seen off an attempt to turn it into a bank. Though it turns out it was a good thing it didn't become a bank, I'm not sure if it's smallness might be a problem under the current circumstances.
