Eurotunnel Quiet

Recommended Posts

Just got back from a week in France and Eurotunnel was very quiet. This was on the first Saturday afternoon of the school holidays. Normally it's busy and there aren't that many spaces free at the terminal. Perhaps more people are holidaying at home this year.

Or maybe Eurotunnel have got their act together and are getting the trains loaded more efficiently?

I rarely pay for Eurotunnel fares as I use Tesco deal vouchers. I usually get about £35 per qtr of Tesco vouchers which I exchange for 4x face value of Eurotunnel vouchers. That gets me over £500 of free Eurotunnel trips per year.

Even without vouchers though Eurotunnel are cheap if you book in advance or off-peak (fares start at £49 each way). Also don't forget there's about 3 trains an hour and the journey is only 35 mins. Also what I do is book for a cheaper departure and then turn up early (sometimes over 4 hours early) and they almost always let you go on an earlier train without asking you to pay the higher tariff. Occasionally you have to wait for your scheduled departure but very rarely. Even if you don't officially get on the earlier train I've found that if you park at the terminal right next to the exit then often you will get waived through if it's not too busy as they don't want lots of people waiting for hours in the car park taking up space.

I just managed to get a KLM Flying Blue miles upgrade on a transatlantic flight for early December. I have never, ever been able to get a miles upgrade on the direct AMS-LAX flight before, even when booking it this far ahead. Their business class sales must have just fallen off a cliff.
