Have Any Grand Design Houses Ever Sold?

Recommended Posts

Just watching one we'd never seen tonight on e4 - square water tower - and my OH piped up with the above question.

I don't remember reading about any selling - and I'm sure this site has coverage enough of the country to know.

So is it a case of self-builders have enough funding?

The houses featured in Grand Designs aren't property developments. They are self-builds/renovations for use as homes. I'm sure over the years that one or two will have been sold on.

I know they're not standard property developments, but was wondering if they are the dream homes - forever homes - or whether any have been funded by pipe dreams.

I can think of a few that went so outrageously over-budget that they were too ashamed to say how much it cost on tv.

The big square box built by the wakeboarder and his rich music director boyfriend as a place to live in for the rest fo there lives was put up for sale about a year after it was completed ;p not sure how much it went for but Im sure it was a profit...

The bunker built in chelternham by the It Guy and his wife at the bottom of the garden as the perfect place for the family to live in was up for rent by the week to tourists.

I don't know if you remember this one, it is less than 3 miles from me and it sold last year.

Do you know how much for?

So they extended it too - how bizarre.

The underground box one struck me as too small too though

One grand design that springs to mind was a couple who were spending money they didn't have (might have been borrowed off parents) like it was going out of fashion.

They had awful taste and had commissioned hand carved or sculpted gargoyles. Cost a bloody fortune. I remember watching it and thinking it was a forced sale/repo waiting to happen.

it made me sick - they spent one of their aging parent's retirement fund as an 'investment'. Shame on them, b*stards.

I saw this one a few months ago, a year or so after the project was actually completed.

http://www.channel4.com/4homes/on-tv/grand...-06-06_p_1.html

The guy was a cabinetmaker who built two houses, planning to sell one to pay for the costs of the other.

As a fellow cabinetmaker I was intrigued and had a look on his website. The house was still for sale!

Unfortunately I can't find the bloody website now!
