Tax Abuser Of The Week

Recommended Posts

On the radio this week somone said that civil servants lied about the true cost of the Olympics to ensure that the project went ahead. We have been denied a vote on the European constitution. We are told that high council tax is essential to run local services. The reality is that most of the money is being syphoned off for fat salaries and gold plated pensions. There seems to be a severe shortage of inegrity in public life these days.

The reality is that most of the money is being syphoned off for fat salaries and gold plated pensions. There seems to be a severe shortage of inegrity in public life these days.

Since my £50k job at the DWP was transferred to a guy from Bombay life has been fantastic.

I 'almost' like this country again.

There are two United Crapdoms - one where you work, get no time for family life, get fined because it's impossible to work without falling foul of Nanny State, end up with no money to pay for the PIGS in charge of UK Animal Farm.

And one where you don't work, have time to fill out all the ******** retentive control freak forms, have time to challange and not get fined and can spend the day peacefully in Wetherspoons, the bookies or in the garden. Loverrly!

Ok let's just make an assumption that the above mentioned jobs are crucial to the smooth running of our country.

You have to ask yourself, does the person that does the job for 150k do that much better a job than the person that could do the same job for 50k? What is that extra 100,000 pounds per year getting us?

Here's the answer: sweet FA, in fact I would hazard a guess that the person doing it for 50k would do a better job.

It's absolutely disgusting if you ask me.

Personally I think this deserves it's own website. The people are now here in droves looking for answers so lets help them find out where their over-priced council tax is going to. Come on someone on here has the skills and surely the domain "taxabuser.co.uk" is for sale somewhere? Come on IT geeks do it!

Director of Place Shaping and Enterprise

Is that like adjusting the boundaries to make them more angular or something?

Or is it rounding off the sharp corners of buildings?

Seems 'de rigeur' these days for LAs to think up as many jobs as possible with 'director' in the title so they can attract board-level salaries.

In practice, these jobs are management jobs, not board level at all.

It would be interesting to know how many direct reports these 'directors' have once in situ.

Bedford of course has an infamous alumnus in Andrea Hill, now CE of Suffolk CC, appointed earlier this year at 220K PA - 31K PA more than the Prime Minister and 70K more than her predecessor (the initial salary of 176K offered was increased as deemed too low by the 'remuneration consultants' to attract a candidate of sufficient calibre).

Of course the argument is always that these people have a level of responsibility on a par with their private sector equivalents.

However, those in the private sector do not have the luxury of a client base (council taxpayers) that HAS to buy your product, and whom you can throw in jail if it doesn't. Also the luxury of raising prices of your product to a level of your own choosing, and the client still having no choice but to pay, isn't something directors of private companies can fall back on.

So I can't really see how the two are equivalent.

I'm sure most of these jobs could be done by pretty much anyone with half a brain. Heck, i'd become Director of Place Shaping and Enterprise for the London Borough of Enfield for £50k. It can't be that hard.

ah, but do you posses an ECDL qualification? Or a NVQ in spatial awareness? Come on people, we need these salary packages to attract the 'best'.

Strange how they never tender for the best when outsourcing school cleaners/catering etc. The cheapest tender always wins. Why is this mentallity not transfered into recruitment?

A hard working head teacher that actually directs children would like half of this amount. As long as people pay their council taxes these pigs will reward themselves with your money. I tried to get my MP interested in investigating them and all he said was they deserve what they are paid. Coming from an MP who has also had his snout in the public trough I can now understand his reaction.

This needs some good investigative journalism to see who is getting these jobs and how the selction process is implemented. My bet is that nepostism runs rampant. Jobs for the boys and all that..................

I can't believe we do this every week.

As with anything some of them are useless fecks. Some of them have 200 staff with all sorts of random legal responsibilities. They have to appear on the telly and sound relatively with it. With that many people underneath that is called a pyramid so people earn a bit more as they go up the ladder.

Please do one of the following:

a) go and apply for one of those jobs if you think its easy. Some of you would could probably walk it but you wouldn't have the experience or political expertise or the nepotism expertise.

B) shut up about it

c) at least pick the ones that are actually worthy of taking the piss - Director of adult social care for christs sake - I know may be we should kill all the elderly and have done with it.

d) get a life - says me who is replying to this ;)

Almost VI - I work in the public sector but I am a contractor ;)

Indeed, L.A. jobs are often created with someone already in mind (hence the tailored job descriptions). Doesn't stop them wasting even more tax money going through the expensive recruitment process sham, reading applications wasting postage replying, days spent interviewing candidates they have no intention of giving the job to.......

Just a thought but how about a blog of some kind?

As somebody else pointed out, there is already the tax payers' alliance but you could make it a bit more specific.

Ideas:

A weekly trawl of the appointments sections

A look at what some of these people actually do - what does Bedfordshire actually get for its 150k, for example

A section of great local government cockups - how much did the people responsible earn?

It could be a bit like Guido Fawkes' blog but focussing on local government. I reckon you could get a good website out of it.

These jobs are not open to anyone who applies. They are jobs for the "lads." Relatives and friends of those who already have the jobs. 140k a year for children's director who sits in an office, attends meetings and goes home early while a hard working head teacher works 10-12 hours a day for 66k. I am surpisred NUT have not investigated what these so-called educator jobs are and who is getting them. IMO, its part and parcel of the entire Brown ship--rotten to the core. We need a taxpapyers revolt a la Prop 13 in California back in the early 1970s when the taxpayers just said NO. The pigs are still squealing in CA to this day.

If a good journo could discover who is getting the jobs and their relationship to existing goverment "workers" I think we might have a scandal on our hands of epic proportions. 140k a year for a childrens director? Come on now, no one is going to believe that is a legit job. These boys are what would be known in the corrupt Southern States of the US as the local "Bubbas." Generational corruption with goverment jobs handed from father to son or as pay offs for political favours. Its far worse at the local level than the national because no one notices what they are doing or paying themselves.

800 civil servants earning over £100k a year before perks!!

Oh yes, anyone can just apply, of course. Try getting a L.A. for £20k and it's just as rife.

I was waiting for an interview in the local tax office, with other candidates. They were already council workers getting redeployed to the role I was interviewed for, yet had to go through the same process for 'Audit' purposes. What is the point?

I dont think you would find much of a scandal to be honest. I work at or near the directors levels. My g/f works in personnel for public sector. Its not jobs for the boys. I am sure some people are liked and go up the ladder but that happens everywhere.

Why doesnt the headteacher just go and become a director of children's services. I know why coz they wouldnt be able to do it thats why. Like a mechanic with one or two garages couldnt nip off and run halfords. Some headteachers already get £100k anyway.

May be they are overpaid but not as overpaid as lawyers (which we have to have due to the laws of the land) or hedge fund city types.

I was as sceptical as you lot before I went to the public sector. They have to provide services for people that no commercial company would. Like transport for one little old lady up some godforsaken potholed road or denominational transport due to a political decision. With waste you wouldnt pick up the waste in countryside areas without chargin more would you?

The whole thing is complex nightmare due to local and central government. I would love to see all you dissenters understand it all. Its a specialism - get over it.

May be there is too much of it - I say get involved then. You can always do Freedom of information requests in your local area.

Either that or join em ;)

Council secretive over top salaries

Brighton and Hove City Council has been criticised for telling taxpayers the six-figure salaries of its highest paid officials are "none of your business".
Town hall chiefs across the country have revealed which of their staff earn more than £100,000 in response to a Freedom of Information request by the Taxpayers' Alliance lobby group.
But the city council refused to give a detailed response and was yesterday accused by campaigners of promoting a "culture of secrecy".

The "bubba" culture has been annoying me for some time so I have today launched a parliamentary request for an investigation. I did this by writing to my new local MP Norman "Norm" Baker. My last MP, John "Johnny-boy" Maples was not interested.

Time to nail the oinkers.

Whilst Dog does a service in identifying the fat cats I would agree his other list is a bit indescriminate.

recent examples I recall include:

£24K Energy Efficiency Officer - basically a junior surveyors job handing out loft insulation grants to old folk.

Various social worker jobs

£35K a year Environmental Health Managers post

None of these are 'fat cat' and are pretty much the white collar $hit shovelling jobs in local govt

Except for the fact that they are all advertised on www.jobsgopublic.com

I do agree with you up to a point but I would get over the need for a tin foil hat thats all.
