PhoneyMcRingRing
"Gordon Brown is now facing the consequences of years of inaction over spiralling personal debt and the unsustainable bubble in the housing market," said Mr Cable. "The Prime Minister bases his credibility on his economic record, yet it is now becoming startling clear he was asleep at the wheel." http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7506940.stm As far as I am aware he is the only politician that knows what is going on. He's the only one telling the truth - they all know what's going on I bet he lies about other stuff though - wouldn't be a politician if he didn't
Leonard Hatred
"The Prime Minister bases his credibility on his economic record, yet it is now becoming startling clear he was asleep at the wheel." I'm sure I've said that on here - by the way Vince, if you're reading this, you've got permission to use anything you want!
interestrateripoff
Debt isn't a problem until people can't pay it back, until that point is reached it's perfectly sustainable.

Guest barebear
Vince Cable is great but then again he can be. Him and the liberals can have all sorts of nice policies and straight thinking,it doesn't matter though as they will never be in government. I dont suppose Brown is such a bad bloke or Blair before him,I dont suppose either wants bad times to fall on the country.Civil servants and big financial institutions run the government, the figure head is told what to say. And its the same civil servants that will run the next tory government, then lets see what Cameron turns into.

We'll know for sure ;-) A couple of weeks ago he was in PMQs and mentioned something along the lines of how quickly Gordo had morphed from Stalin to Mr Bean. It struck me then that he might be a secret visitor to our little haven. Vincent, Vincent give us a wave...

gordonbrown
then lets see what Cameron turns into. He's already turned into a standard politition. Saying absolutely nothing not scripted. Maybe it's what it takes to get ellected nowadays, but it dose not inspire me with confidence.

Absolutely, the parties seem to have perfected the art of spin but have totally neglegted the skills needed to actually govern property. The problem for them is spin doesn't work when people see the complete opposite happening around them. It's like Brown and Darling's refusal to admit that their economic policies were bad, or that the UK economy is about to drop off a cliff and we need to prepare. They just blabber on as if everything is okay and expect people to lap it up. It worked for ten years but it ain't gonna work anymore. Guest barebear
I think the only one that has ever stood outside the box was Thatcher for better or for worse, probably more for worse. She started this boom and bust thing, she presided over loose lending the first time round, she sold off council properties, she privatised everything. She created the yuppy that has morphed into the BTL'er and its they that have created such a big bubble.

Yes, the last thing we need right now is a PR man, used to be director of a cocktail bar chain. Truely shocking is the state of UK politics today. RFD - why is this your achilles heel? Are you constitutionally/ institutionally anti Tory (Glasgow East?) - in which case this is a bad time for you, I know. Cameron is the best leader of the opposition the Tories have produced for years and without the strong rattling he gives Gronad every week at the dispatch box Liebor would be getting away with a lot more. I agreed with RFD, Brown is a useless bumbling buffoon, and his incompetence has screwed us all, but the prospect of a Cameron Government scares me a lot more. The man will take power by any means possible, and I think he'd be more determined to hold onto it than Brown, which is why he hasn't confirmed that the Tories will repeal the law on 42-days. ParticleMan
... and of course the great man lead us to the polls in the last election with a platform of austerity for all and budget surplusses for the Government. Two-faced, hypocritical, sleazy, teflon-coated slime merchant. Who knows exactly what he's doing, and doesn't mind a bit of the old reach-around at the electorate's expense. "An eel in the fundamental mud" about sums it up. In other words, a commensurate politician - in an era that's going to need statesmen and leadership rather that populists, he's a relic of our regrettable past. And its the same civil servants that will run the next tory government, then lets see what Cameron turns into. I agree that B&B did not intentionally cause harm, but I don't accept that they simply do what banks and civil servants tell them. Rather I see it this way. They have/had the responsibility of running the Country, and they have some principles they have set out and a responsibility to follow the prospectus promises, but they lack the specialist skill set to understand the economy, their knowledge on a whole range of issues is suboptimal, and they have a time horizon that is shorter than the Country requires it to be. But B&B have imposed their will on the Country without being prepared to listen to the arguments, consult, delegate responsibility to those in a better position to make decisions or mange process, and they have made policy to keep short term interests at heart, where the correct solution would have been uncomfortable in the short term but in the longer term interests of the Country. The more I hear Brown talk about making the decisions for the long term, the more obvious it is that he is doing exactly the opposite, he cannot afford the short term political backlash to the difficult decisions. The more I hear people tell me how clever he is, the more it seems an attempt to remove questioning of the fact that the evidence suggests he is narrow-minded, lacking in vision or courage, and lacking intellectual rigour. He simply has a chip on his shoulder and to the likes of Prescott and co, on a relative basis, is a little smarter than the average woefully inadequate cabinet member. So to my mind, we enter a phase where having pandered to short term interest and having favoured the pet projects, the self-interests, they have run out of quick fixes, they have compromised the economy to an unsustainable level, and they are exposed as incompetent. ParticleMan
But B&B have imposed their will on the Country That's entirely the problem though, these odious toads are populists; they've perfected the art of leadership by opinion poll - they're looking in the rearview mirror when they need to look through the windshield. And Cable's equally rotten. I'm not sure whether WebCameron2.0 is just dim, or playing a long game yet. Regardless, the effect is that Labour are accelerating toward the abyss and there's no stopping and no turning back now. A bit like the BBC... Yes I can go along with that, the institution is the institution, incompetence plays a huge part, and there are all sorts of manouvers going on. My post was too simplistic, there are loads of wheels within wheels.
John51
Would an 'Internet Party' be any better? No chief whip, every vote is a free vote. No outside cash donations required. Anyone interested can print up some fliers or burn a few CDs and deliver them to their neighbours. Each constituency would have its own forum which would choose the candidate for the next election. If you don't live there, you ain't going to be the candidate for that area. Anyone elected can make a donation to cover hosting costs. Hopefully we can lose the red flag or blue flag 2 card trick we've had for too long and have OUR local representative in government acting on OUR behalf.
