Laura
My sources have revealed that secret talks between Santanader, A&L & the Govt. have been going on for months. This should come as no suprise as we all knew A&L were finished. What will be a suprise are the changes to the benefit system which was sold as part of the package. Santander had refused to take on A&L without this. The govt had been considering privatising the benefit system & this seemed a golden chance to dump it, so it was win win. Little disruption should occur at first as Giros will be sent out as normal; but later a switch to either Abbey's or A&L's legendary computer systems will be necessary, to be followed by a radical change to benefit collection. This news will not come out for some months but it thought that these later changes will cause some inconvenience to the less fit claimants when Giros will have to be collected in person from Santanders head office, but signing on will have to be at an A&L branch. It is hoped that this will go along way towards curing Britain's growing obesity problem. A Govt advertising campaign will be launched with the slogan;- "It's Good for the Soul". I will post further details as soon as I receive them

Laura
is this a wind up? No it isn't. It will save the treasury billions. The country is in crisis & the Govt are well aware of what has to be done. They have no choice but to effectively dump claimants. This seemed a better way than all other proposals. Nationalist
I was buying it until the bit about claimants collecting their GIROs in person from Santander's HQ. You over-egged it there.
Contango and Cash
IF this is true I'm stunned. But you mean effectively Santander does the 'payroll' instead of Girobank? It shows the depths of this crisis if true.

Laura
IF this is true I'm stunned. But you mean effectively Santander does the 'payroll' instead of Girobank? It shows the depths of this crisis if true. With Girobank being a part of A&L the transition should be smooth & more importantly, cheap. The redundancies at job centres should also curb the public sector pay rise demands. I think most have forgotten that the welfare state is a relatively recent luxury, & certainly is unaffordable now
copydude
Another rubbish thread.Edited to add: From Laura Really? Have you a better explanation of why a worthless bank's shares unaccountably rose 47% today? And after a bid from a wobbly Spanish bank that isn't even paying in cash. So, tell me again, for every A&L share, Santander will pay depositors 1.5 litres of Sangria? Personally, I found the idea of those on disability benefits being shipped to Murcia quite credible. They're not voting Labour anymore. My sources suggest a different scenario from Laura's, but it is essentially the same, with new Remploy factories making instant Paella being jointly funded by Labour backers Bradford & Barcelona and Sainsbury. Freeholder
With thr Labour party £24M in debt and not enough income to pay the interest anything is possible. 24mil is peanuts to Banco Santander, why mess about buying the benefits system, why not make a bid for the whole ruling party? Bliar sold seats in the upper house of the legislature so it would be a logical progression of an existing Labour policy.
