crown
http://thecrownblogspot.blogspot.com/2008/...-week-make.html Incredibly this is the first interview I have seen, where a non-bear has talked about a downturn being good for first time buyers and younger people, that houses had risen too much and that it was bad for labour. Bearback Mountain
I have been waiting for these two to speak out for years about house prices, about time.
ChiefCashier
It was a joy to watch politicians speaking the truth. The world feels a little bit cleaner. I saw this little gem last night and was exultant when Portillo poured scorn on the VI's calls for 'help for first time buyers'. To hear anybody make this point on the BBC was amazing. Great work, crown.
The Ayatollah Buggeri
Portaloo and Abbott always seem to make media appearances together. Do you think they've got a soft spot for each other?
OLDFTB
"Portillo And Abbott "? Sounds like a comedy double act. "Who's on first base"?
lets get it right
I have to say I've always been a little ambivalent about Dianne Abbott. But when I saw her comments during the 42 day debate - my opinion of her changed. I happen to agree with what she said - but that isn't the point. The point is she will not bow down and do what the whips tell her to do. She told the Labour whips where to go. Pity there aren't a few more politicians willing to stand up for what they believe in, rather than what they are told to believe in. We would never have gone into Iraq if that were the case. geoffk
Give portillo some credit as about two months ago he said "housing crash" and said that it was about time too...also he said that the goverment could do nothing to stop it..

The way she talked down to the cheeky girls was an Abbott moment.
MRMX9
Diane Abbott knows all to well how obscene prices have become in her home area of Hackney - locals are priced out and its destroying communities. £1m for a terraced house in a deprived area like Hackney - madness! Minos
It was a joy to watch politicians speaking the truth. The world feels a little bit cleaner. Yes. I've been a little rude about Miss Diane in the past. Although I detest the government she is a part of, I respect her for telling the truth about what she believes in (big government) and how she feels about her leader. At least you know where you stand with her. Better than the 11 years of endless lies and bullsh1t we've suffered.
Fudge
I think she is an absolute legend. If I was in a room with her, she would probably come to some harm. The way she talked down to the cheeky girls was an Abbott moment. Well she took a superior attitude towards the cheeky girls asking them what that thought about the economy when she doesnt have much more of an idea herself, so I thought a bit ironic. Also she called herself a Socialist She also is now distancing herself from Brown and Blair and cosying up to Harriet Harmon because she thinks Harmon will take over as leader. She is the perfect example of the New Labour career politician.
huw
Give portillo some credit as about two months ago he said "housing crash" and said that it was about time too...also he said that the goverment could do nothing to stop it.. I remember Portillo when he was Chief Secretary to the Treasury, banging on about the importance of sound money (which is fundamentally why he was so hated: easy money = easy popularity). For comparison, Yvette Copper is now in that role. How things have changed.

head for the hills!
Portillo is an excellent example of someone whose face didn't fit - in Cameron's body he'd have made an excellent opposition leader / PM
tinker
Saw that last night, posted in another thread. ...both Diane Abbott and Michael Portillo said that house prices falls were a good thing (especially for FTBs), and that prices had got too high - ridiculously so. Those of us aware of the insanity of it all, wondered why politicians never said anything. Were they carried along or just duplicitous? So finally having them talking sense is a good thing. They now need to let the market take its course - there will be losers but for most and for the good of the country house prices falling back to 3x salary levels will be a good thing. pppeter
I remember Dianne Abbott talking about being pushed out of a banking-related parliamentary committee because she'd become too knowledgeable about the industry. Not sure of the details and can't find much on Google but the search did come up with this. Fill in the blanks for yourselves or read the article for $32: In the summer of 1997, Labour whips removed Labour MP Diane Abbott, a vocal opponent of central ... from her seat on the Commons Treasury select committee. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=A...5d0b81317765bc5 Is she our very own Ron Paul? bridget
I liked the comments she made about carrying GB out of no.10! Pity about the Harriet/Hilary mix-up, cost her a bit of my newly earned respect. Good show, but do you think the tin hat references were sourced here?

Guest tbatst2000
I remember Dianne Abbott talking about being pushed out of a banking-related parliamentary committee because she'd become too knowledgeable about the industry. She was excellent on the treasury select committee - she's clearly one of those people who can read and assimilate huge amounts of information very quickly. I respect her for that ability and, after the 42 days thing, my general opinion of her has gone up as well. She should leave labour and join the lib-dems, seems like she'd fit in better there. Executive Sadman
Politicians in stating the bleeding obvious shocker!!! Amazingly enough im not joking. They all seem to think the last thing FTBs need is lower prices...Abolition of stamp duty, shared ownership, huge mortgages, yes, lower prices, good god no. Abbotts another champagne socialist hypocrite though
