How can these house lenders stay in business with losses of this magnitude occuring on an almost daily basis. Would YOU hold their stock?

Could well be. It seems the former building societies that didn't get bought out by the major banks had a thirst for silly lending. I guess after years of running a mutual the management teams got incredibly greedy and jumped on the securitization bandwagon.

Alliance and Leicester have had the benefit of public subsidy, were able to buy Girobank for peanuts from Thatcher, which carried with it a lot of profitable Social Security business. A&L did not think the Post Office connection was glamourous enough so let that side of the business wither. Now the Post Office needs subsidy . To my mind, A&L have had their help from the public purse. Crash and burn.

A&L are another dodgy pedler with no contingency plan - nothing. Thier whole business model, along with the other two, revolved around feeding at the troff today and who cares about tomorrow.

Tomorrow has now arrived.

I'd forgotten about Girobank; thanks for reminding me.
