The U.k.'s Antitrust Regulator Offered A Reward Of As Much As 100,000 Pounds ($198,000) For Informants

Feb. 29 (Bloomberg) -- The U.K.'s antitrust regulator offered a reward of as much as 100,000 pounds ($198,000) for informants that provide information about price fixing and illegal cartels.

The 18-month pilot program starting today is part of a wider crackdown on antitrust violations by the Office of Fair Trading, said Simon Williams, the regulator's senior director of cartels and criminal enforcement.

``Cartels are secretive by definition,'' Williams said in a telephone interview. ``They're very difficult to unearth and prove. The main way you can successfully do it is through insider information.''

The new program is a step to go beyond the leniency programs that most antitrust regulators rely on for company's engaging in price fixing to report violations. The OFT also is also awaiting the sentencing of three men connected to Grimsby, England-based Dunlop Oil & Marine Ltd. in the first U.K. arrests involving antitrust charges.
