NI budget: Extra £150m found in final deal

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-30872327

Regardless of the headlines 'the overall amount available to spend on public services in the coming year is almost unchanged in cash terms at £10.2bn - down by just 0.6%.'

The Public sector, which employs 210,000 in NI will reduce its workforce, over the next 4 years by 20,000. this will happen a combination of measures including a voluntary exit scheme and recruitment freezes.

Interesting report out called "City Outlook 2015" by the Centre for Cities. As the name suggests it looks at the major cities rather than regions. http://www.centreforcities.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/15-01-09-Cities-Outlook-2015.pdf

Belfast comes out bottom on the table for 'highest level of inequality' but not on income. There is lots of information and I will need to read further.

One table that did jump out was "Ratio of private sector to public sector jobs". Belfast, surprisingly has not the lowest ratio. Oxford holds that title with exactly 1:1. Cambridge, Worthing, Dundee (surprisingly), Hastings, Swansea, Brirkenhead and Plymouth have all a lower ratio of private sector jobs to public.

I can understand Oxford and Cambridge as they are university cities but others surprise me.

Belfast, it claims has 202,022 Private Sector Jobs (2013) and 116,817 Public Sector Jobs.

cheers for that. quite interesting !

So Miskelly's Ten Square has gone into administration.

Massive surprise. Truly massive…

If only he was able to follow through with his plans to add 80 bedrooms. I'm sure the £17 million purchase price in 2007 had nothing to do with it.

"The firm's fixed assets - which refers to the hotel building - were valued at £4.2m while creditors were owed £3.8m."

strange that it only owes £3.8m.

I thought it would be more. I've heard various figures thrown around on the purchase price. 17 million was taken from a beltel article. Maybe threw some cash in. Applecroft accounts are "interesting ".

Aerospace company Bombardier offered £65m from Invest NI to boost jobs

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-31002285

Aerospace company Bombardier has topped the list of companies being offered financial support from Invest NI.

The economic development agency has assisted Shorts Brothers, or Bombardier as it is now, with 64 offers of aid worth a combined £65m. According to new figures released by Invest NI, the aid has created or safeguarded more than 2,300 jobs.

The agency has offered more than £1.5bn in grants to firms in Northern Ireland since it was established in 2002. It said its financial assistance can be in "a variety of forms", including loans.

Behind Bombardier comes pharmaceutical company Almac, whose headquarters are in Craigavon, which has received offers of £58m, partly used in support of 1,600 jobs.

Recently it was disclosed that US technology company Seagate had been offered £175m towards it operations in County Londonderry since 1992.

It is the third most supported firm by Invest NI, receiving £40m, followed by Citibank, which received £34m and Randox, which Invest NI assisted with funding of £29m.

Output in Northern Ireland falls at its fastest rate in two years

http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/business/news/output-in-northern-ireland-falls-at-its-fastest-rate-in-two-years-30974234.html

It is retail which leads the "descending trajectory", with construction and manufacturing also witnessing further drops.

Meanwhile, employment numbers dropped amid reports of less new work and firms trying to reduce their costs.

The level of new business also wained last month, ending 19-months of expansion, according to the bellwether survey. Ulster Bank chief economist Richard Ramsey said the private sector "has not had the best of starts for 2015".

"Local firms reported their first simultaneous decline in output, new orders and employment since May 2013," he said.

Exports also fell once again - dropping for the third consecutive month. Scotland was the only other region in the UK to suffer a downturn.

Business confidence has been weakening since the end of 2014, according to Ann McGregor of the Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

"After what had been an improving economic picture for business over the last couple of years, signs of a slowdown have become more apparent towards the end of 2014," she said.

"We have seen business confidence weakening and in fact for our service sector members it is weakest of the UK regions."

Down goes Applecroft.

Surprising. I think not.

Cerberus: US investment fund in move against developer John Miskelly

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-31506774

The US investment fund Cerberus has made a major move against the developer John Miskelly, appointing receivers to several of his Belfast properties.

It took control of loans made to some of his firms when it bought Northern Ireland's Nama loan portfolio.

The properties in receivership include office blocks and development sites.

In January, Cerberus appointed administrators to Ten Square hotel in Belfast, that was also controlled by Mr Miskelly.

The hotel is continuing to trade while the business is reviewed.

The properties in receivership were all held by a firm called Applecroft Investments. They are:

Norwich Union House office block on Fountain Street in Belfast

Londonderry House office block on Chichester Street in Belfast

A development site on Queen Street in Belfast which has planning permission for a budget hotel

A property at East Bridge Street in Belfast, understood to be a development site

A property at Coolmillish Road in Markethill, County Armagh

St Patrick's Park in Newcastle, County Down

The most recent accounts for Applecroft Investments showed it owes its creditors more than £80m, while its assets are valued at just £36m.

Cerberus has previously said it has "a long and demonstrated history of treating our borrowers consistently and fairly".

It added that: "Not every borrower will like the outcome.

"That's to be expected given these are loans in default. But we will be consistent in our approach, focused on a constructive resolution and always respectful of the market."

"In a population of 1.8m, more than one in nine people in Northern Ireland are now receiving the disability benefit. This is compared to just over one in 20 in Britain. When broken down, Wales is the closest in comparison to Northern Ireland with around 1 in 12."

Something badly wrong here.
