How do people think this move will affect Britain's economic position in the world in 2008 ?.

British officials said the UK economy, with its strength in the service sector, was well placed to complement China's dynamic manufacturing boom.

A remarkable flash of wisdom from Gordon Brown, or not ?.

I read this article and just laughed it off as spin, Gordon's spin.

So what is Gordon Brown expecting? Our trade deficit to continue to widen at a faster rate with us taking more imports? We have problems as it is..!

On the face of it, it doesn't look like spin because the video shows him physically bowing to the Chinese and they are long on symbolism, especially as the USA say they bow to no-one.

A show of humility mite make China warm to us as apposed to America, and lets face it, Britain will need all the friends she can get in the next few years.

Exactly what we have to offer China is still a mystery and i hope China doesn't simply go on a "Buy Britain" campaign, throwing the residue into the wast basket marked Losers. We havn't got many companies left to sell have we?

It could all be just a flash in the pan though.

The economic genius of Brown is at work again here - it knows no bounds!! This is how it'll work: the Chinese are getting rich from their exports and manufacturing and as they do, lots of them will want to find second homes abroad and buy up assets. As housing is the UK's only industry, it is well-placed to flog cottages and villages to the Chinese, who already are quite fond of the English lifestyle, it would seem. That's what Gordon Brown meant by saying the UK has a service sector that is well-placed to complement China's manufacturing strengths.

So: rich Chinese buy up Britain's assets aka its Barratt homes, British people become estate agents to show Chinese around homes and it's the miracle economy all over again - full employment with everyone working as an estate agent, house prices remain high AND you get the benefits of multiculturalism, all in one. Genius.
