I Enquired About A House Today!

there was a 'bargain' on rightmove, which just went from 'offer' to available again.. so i called the EA. the story was that the previous offer was someone hoping to buy, renovate, and flip, before emigrating - presumably to boost the funds. it had fell through due to the time taken, what with all the red tape.

the whole conversation was geared around the assumption that i was an 'investor', who could take this 'shell', and spend a few grand on it, and sell it for a fat profit. he booked me an appointment. towards the end i mentioned that i was a FTB and wanted it to live in, which seemed to quieten him for a moment, like such a rare beast hadn't been sighted for some time. i asked him if there was the possibility of a low offer, which he ruled out.. so appointment cancelled.

my point being, (just like how the search default on most property portals is 'sort by highest price'.. i mean, why would you?), just how ingrained some aspects of this ridiculous market have become. this guy was at one of the really big nationwide EAs - and the idea of a genuine FTB with a deposit was a totally alien concept to him.

when I sold a flat in 2004 I was treated by one EA as a developer, mainly as I had given it a lick of paint prior to putting up for sale (I had lived in it for 13 years) - amongst other things he questioned why I hadn't turned a space ocupied by a desk into a second bedroom!

i hate being in thrall to these people. i was thinking on my general dealings with EA's and their ilk over the last couple of years, and generally how badly i've been treated. the general arrogance, the sweeping assumptions. a house really is a big ticket item, and you get better customer service ordering a DVD.

..and god, i wish they could spell. if i'm handing over 150 grand, i would prefer the mediators to have a basic grasp of grammar.

yesterday i saw a sign saying 'coming soon' or similar, with a mobile number, which i called. turns out to be for sale or rent 275k / 600pcm !!?! the rent implying a value of c100k FFS. but that's not my point - the chap didn't even want my details, just said 'keep an eye on the sign, call back in a few months'. yeh, cos in a few months people are going to be snapping his hand off for 275k, unremarkable house, no garden, by a kebab shop in a small town in the north midlands. i bet he'll be wishing he'd taken my number soon enough.
