Flood Victims' Purpose Built Caravan Park Opens

Recommended Posts

Some families expected to have to live their for 18 months

The only purpose-built caravan park in England for the victims of this summer's floods officially opens in Toll Bar near Doncaster on Monday.

The site will house about 50 families for up to 18 months as repairs are carried out to their homes.

Doncaster's mayor Martin Winter said it was a "radical solution" to keep the community together as it recovers from the damage suffered in June.

"The psychological impact on the community has been huge," he said.

Mr Winter said he was pleased that the caravan park, complete with electricity supplies and its own sewage system, had been completed within seven weeks.

The decision was made to hold the community together - most people don't want to be pushed far and wide

"A lot of the community was under water for two weeks and some properties were flooded for four weeks," he said.

"The flooding affected nearly 80% of the community here in terms of housing damage.

"The decision was made to hold the community together - most people don't want to be pushed far and wide - and to have this caravan park was a radical solution.

"The vast majority of those affected wanted to be kept together, they wanted to remain here to supervise the repairs to their properties."

Last week, temporary classrooms opened at Toll Bar Primary School, which was badly damaged in the deluge.

It could be up to 18 months before repairs to the main school building are complete.
