steve99
Peak oil is a conspiracy myth. It definitely will not happen in our lifetime. I think the future lies in nuclear power plus susainable energy sources like solar, wind, wave etc. The main reason for this is the desire to reduce polution. The conspiricy is the collusion of the government and various VI's like of course the oil industry, in fact I would say the government is more than well aware of this and that is why they are going on about global warming, ie cut back burning fossel fuels etc when they know that the real and immediate looming problem is peak oil and not having a real answer to it. It is a material and easily investigated fact that the North Sea has very much passed its peak and is now on the downward slope, also the USA passed its peak in 1970, Mexico is in big trouble etc etc, and there is more than enough evidence around to support the fact that Saudi Arabia peaked last year. Overall we are now on a platau and barring miracles we will be heading into deep sh*t within 2- 3 years if not before. Governments being the type of animal they are, ie not willing to be the bearers of bad news (affects votes) will prevaricate left right and centre about whats really going on, blame Arabs, blame terrorists, OPEC etc etc, maybe have a few more wars etc. Alternatives are there in many forms, however will not be there in sufficient quantities or usable forms in time to counteract oil depletion. Another fact to consider to exacibate the problem is that most countries that currently export oil have over the years increased their own reliance on oil, eg, Saudi Arabia's population has doubled in a very short space of time and as such they will slowly but surely cut back on exports in order to satisfy their own needs. Meantime I would suggest any property bought is withing reach of good public transport (electric trains) and wean yourselves of the idea of the 2 car family where motoring is the only option when you want /need to get out. Do a bit of research and you will quickly find that this is not by any measure a whacko conspiricy theory, the people involved in exposing this information mostly consist of scientists and geologists with many years experiecne in the oil industry who have connections everywhere constantly feeding them information. The people not to be trusted are big business and politicians who always have their own, often hidden adgenda which will not doubt be at your expense. Jason
If the price of petrol keeps going up then people will just have to damand that the tax on petrol is cut. To be honest, I've always thought the government could lessen the impact of higher oil prices by reducing fuel tax as the price goes up (assuming it is higher, which it is). But that didn't happen did it.

Its no more a conspiracy than your pint being empty after you've downed it. Global warming is the red herring. It is easier to pretend to offer a choice about damaging the planet or becoming greener, when the reality is we will be forced to cut back on consumption due to lack of availability. Scarcity of key resources will regulate the damage we are able to do to the planet in our lifetime. Edited August 7, 2007 by Jay76
carseller
I have studied energy security for over 5 years and am peak oil and peak gas aware, how on mother earth can houe prices rise by 40% by 2012? By 2012 Britain will be in the middle of an energy crisis, oil will be + 100 or 150 USD prices like that will caue unpresidented energy led inflation and peak oil and gas will be a household name along with climate change by then, did these people who came out with this news go to the numpty school of economics?Let alone the amount Britain will have to spend on energy imports as our north sea dwindles to nothing, and we decomission old nuke power plants and hope that the french can produce enough nuclear power for them as well as supply us with energy. Those smug idiots who actually believe that there house is a train to wealth need to check out latoc powerswicth and peakoil.com before they get to full of them selves. one bad hurricane in the next 2 months could make the whole house of cards collaspe and if it dnt come this year, i bet my wifes hanbag it will be truly upon us by 2012, but then im just a conspiracy theorist. I think oil prices have topped out already because the people that always buy at the wrong time are fully loaded with energy stocks. And there is a bubble in sun energy companies. davidg
Anyone who thinks a petroleum crisis is not just around the corner is living in fantasy land. It has already arrived in the US - the high price of gas has had an affect on housing market as people can't afford mortgage repayments and also a looking to move much closer to where they work. Out of town, high energy cost housing is going to look very unattractive by 2015.

I'm not going to be so crass as to suggest that weight of these SUV's brought the bridge down (though increased numbers 4X4's are increasing the stresses on some London bridges, partly because the ignorant owners ignore the weight restrictions). It suggests that americans are still not too bothered about rising fuel costs, and the scope for saving is considerable, by just downsizing their vehicles (which seem to get bigger and bigger). Scarcity of key resources will regulate the damage we are able to do to the planet in our lifetime. Take a macro view of mankind and the whole thing looks rather similar to any anaerobic parasitic entity. The individual components that comprise the mass operate under a specific set of behavioral codes. There is no such code to govern the behavior of the mass as a whole, however an observable behavior of the mass emerges from the countless operations of the individuals therein. When exposed to a consumable source the mass will bloom. Rapidly increasing in population. This is important to the survival of the genetic code. As a blooming mass is forced to spread and drift. The dramatic increase in population results in a dramatic increase in waste toxins which hinder the operations of individual components. This results in a diffusion of the components into their surroundings increasing the likely hood of finding another consumable source and repeating the process before they all die, and suffer extinction.
