Board & Lodgings

When I began working as an apprentice mechanical engineer at my fathers company in 1992 at the age of 16. I was asked (told) I would be donating £20 of my weekly income to the upkeep of the house and such (in no way did my folks need the money, this was more of a moral lesson). At that time this equated to 20% of my weekly income. So my question is, is board and lodgins still a technique used these days and what proportion of income should it reflect?
