Quote - some bright spark - "why don't we incorporate the Revenue, Customs & Excise, VAT office. Add Immigration Agency. Then arm them. maybe add the police for good measure"

ok, sinister spin on my part, but not that far from the truth...

I think this is a good idea, you cannot fight terrorists gangs with batons.

And also given that it has been publicised by the Government that terrorism will only be countered by the public, then also the public should now have the right to carry arms.

If everyone in the UK had a handgun, or small grenade, I am sure terrorism and criminal gangs would dissapear overnight.

Its yet another whitewash.

A cheap rebranding exercise to try to fool the population of this country that something is being done.

A new logo and a fresh lick of paint at immigration points is as far as it'll go.

Meanwhile terrorists, criminals, illegal migrants and economic opportunists continue to come and go as they please.

*sighs*

ID cards for uk residents by 2012.

Compulsory to carry by 2013

ID cards for people coming in who are going to stay more than 6 months?

Are you coming in for 6 months or less?

Yes.

Ok, away you go sir, no need for a biometric visa.

6 months later...

Well where is he? He promised he wasn't staying longer than this.

Oh fantastic!

The net result? You try to smuggle an extra litre of Jack Daniels back into the country without paying duty and they shoot you in the knee caps..............meanwhile the terrorists are busy driving 4x4s full of explosives through the front entrance!

Even if the police officer has the common sense to use it, he/she (to be politically correct) would be up for investigation and be instantly suspended from duty pending. Even in seemingly lawful circumstances the police complaints commision would recommend to the CPS a criminal trail dragging in all ranks.

So yes an officer is stupid for even carrying a gun let alone using one.

Agree.

Pets are more thoroughly checked and controlled than people. Try and get round those rules!

Quick, deflection tactics in play.

I just read that AlQaeda is losing support among Arabs apparently sickened by the ongoing carnage in Iraq and the bomb that wiped out 50 football fans enjoying an afternoon's footie in which players represented Sunnis, Shia and the other lot. The Arabs should tell Bin Laden to "get a life" rather than to keep taking them.

Hard on the heels of the Welfare State comes the Police State.

When I read 1984 years ago I had an imgae of what Big Brother would like like. I never saw cheesy smiley faces like TB but dark brooding ones with a facial tick. If only David "Scotty" Cameron was not so wet.

We are well on the road towards a police state already and soner or later we need to organise and stop them else we will all be given implanted RFID's and then be milked like cows.

lets go to code red

What's the point in an armed border force with such a soft justice system? They might catch people but then what? I would imagine being taken to task by the UK judiciary is akin to being savaged by a wet lettuce. Coupled with the fact that I've been abroad 5 or 6 times a year for the last 3 years and have never seen a customs officer makes me think this has more to do with controlling the UK population than controlling foreigners entering the UK.
