"It's the type of highly-desirable family home that is well beyond the reach of many middle-class professionals.

A detached period house, with eight bedrooms, a garden, its own driveway and all set in a leafy residential area of well-to-do Newbury, Berkshire.

But Carl and Samantha Gillespie - together with their 12 children - have been able to move in without paying the slightest heed to Britain's sky-rocketing house prices.

In fact the couple have been given the keys without lifting a finger in work."

He said: "Some people may think we're a bunch of spongers, but it's not true." His wife added: "I was born to have children, it's what I am here for."

One has to wonder what will become of these children with parents like this.

They'll have babies by the time they are 15 and shortly thereafter be given 'free' (for them) housing and benefits etc. for life...

OR, they will be able to buy the house for a substantial discount under the 'Right-to-buy' scheme, then sell the house for about £1 million and split the dosh between them all - sorted!

Wow! I agree with your frustration. How the heck this was allowed to happen? The house is more than 11 times their joint income!

Just you wait until their kids grow up and get on the dole as well - will be one happy family! £200K in benefits, anyone?

Now that would be hilarious. I'm beginning to think who can blame them.

Why do we allow this? This is OUR country, not Labours... If I was in power I would cut all benefits, nada after months out of work, unless you have a VALID medical reason. Simple choice, become productive or Starve. There should be no other choice. We pay 7 times, yes 7 times more in social security than we do for both the armed forces budget and Education budget. :(

They ARE being productive! She has 'produced' 12 babies already - probably more to come too!

The funny thing is that most people moaning about this will have voted labour in without the faintest idea what a Socialist government is like!

Mark.

quite a nice house too - I wouldn't complain if I were given this...

It actually looks like a Council house though...

I'm not too concerned by it. It's not 'worth' £500k anyway, although I am firmly against this systematic 'sponging' in society. I know of a few people who are claiming for everything they can (quite legitimately) and who already know that it isn't worth them expending any effort in getting back in to work.

On the other hand, you only need to have very modest housing and income before you get F all. It seems that you either need to be earning a very decent crust or else you might as well not bother at all, particularly if you have kids.

I saw that piechart too, absolutely unbelievable, and unsustainable.

Sooner or later either benefits will need to be cut, or the government is going

to be facing deficits which need to be financed through the printing presses.

This is a policy that will end in disaster.

I was born to have children

And:

However, in June last year the property burnt down when one of the family's youngest twins played with a cigarette lighter.

Born to have them maybe, not obviously born to look after them to any great extent. Perhaps I'll let my lad burn my house down and see what the council come up with.....

It's a lot to expect two adults to look after 12 children. I think the government should provide a nanny really.

Amazing.

"I am here to pay my taxes so that other, probably much thicker, people can have lots of kids", said RichM in his rented flat with 17 quid a week for child benefit.

Two nannies, at least.

Be fair, he is seeking employment.

that's one of the crazy things, he's said he doesn't want to work as he would get a reduction in his benefits. Thus as he isn't actually seeking employment, he shouldn't actually receive this money.

Hmmm.....so, you work for a living and live in a rented flat presumably on an AST with no security beyond a few months. These guys have a large council supplied property with a secure tenancy, enough money to run an ok car (assuming that's theirs and not the reporter that did the story) and no requirement to go and wage slave. Ask yourself who's thicker! Makes me want to weep really.

Yes it is outragoius that a crappy home is worth £500,000.

but

£44,000/14 people = £3142 per person per year. Those 12 children are worth that when the welfare state collapses and they work, find they can only rent, and pay taxes to the elite via ID cards.
