Food Inflation

Recommended Posts

A good artical from BBC about why foods prices are rising. Two main reasons:

  1. Direct food demand from China
  2. Biofuels absorbing food production

Good news for the farmers, well up until there is no fuel for the tractors or modern (oil based) fertilisers anyway...

(Sorry if this has been posted before, I did look, honest ;) )

I'd be interested to know how much energy is consumed in making a litre of biofuel

Food price inflation may come form a slightly more immediate source than this - the torrential rain!

Just been on the phone to my Dad (ex farmer) he says its so bad that virtually no hay and silage has been got this year so far so nothing to feed animals on this winter. The oilseed rape (margarine and biofuel raw material) should be being harvested right now and barley (beer raw material) by end of July with wheat (bread and biscuits raw material) shortly after that but with all this rain the tractors, trailers and harvesters cannot get near the fields. Pretty soon grain will be sprouting in the ear before it has been harvested or just rotting if this rain does not stop - prices are responding already.

When it rains it pours - for the BoE that is. This rain could not have come at a worse time for food price inflation.
