We've just sold our house through a small guy in Oxfordshire (http://www.fitzhomes.co.uk) who was good, but Ive used big names in the past and found them very variable in quality. Had it on with a small independent EA for first 3 months, didn't get too far. Then put it on with Townends as well, who got us a buyer after 3 months. Hard to know really, the market was not that great round here last 6 months of 2006 (couldn't reduce asking price too far as ex wouldn't let me!). The only thing that seemed to make a real difference was they would get people round from their other branches so got more viewings generally - the EA I dealt with told me fewer people than you would think use the internet to look for property. I guess it comes down to the competance of particular individuals at the end of the day. I doubt there is much difference in quality - they are all cr*p.
