Flooding Causing Inflation In Food Sector

Recommended Posts

Some farmers reckon there is now no potato crop in the UK not suffering from blight. The yields from other vegetables will be well down and wheat is also a problem.

The Times has already disclosed the shortage of peas caused by the wet weather and flooding and how other vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower and French beans will be in short supply and command high prices.

The Office for National Statistics reported in June that food prices were up 4.9 per cent in a year; vegetable prices, including potatoes, were up 9.6 per cent and fish up 12.7 per cent. Bread could also cost more because the wet weather is forecast to depress yields from this year’s wheat crop. There is concern too that supplies of Brussels sprouts will be down.

Radio 4 were making the connection between flooding and mortgage costs last night.

So we can expect food to be dropped from the basket of goods they use to calcuate the rate of inflation soon - stick in a few more Ipods and no one will notice

We should grow house bricks.

We don't need no farming or manufacturing. We have a printing press, we can import everything else.

:D:D
