Still No Point In Getting A Mortgage, Hpc Or No Hpc

"Oil consultancy PFC Energy briefed Dick Cheney in 2005 that on a more realistic assessment of Opec's reserves, its production could peak by 2015. A report by the US Department of Energy, also in 2005, concluded that without a crash programme of mitigation 20 years before the event, the economic and social impacts of the oil peak would be "unprecedented". The evidence suggests these fears were already weighing heavily with Cheney, Bush and Blair."

The latest statistical work by Dallas geologist Jeffrey Brown over at The Oil Drum.com, suggests that something else is happening, something that was not anticipated: an imminent oil export crisis. This Export Land Theory states that exporting nations will have far less oil available for export than was previously assumed under older models. (Story Here.) The theory states that export rates will drop by a far greater percentage than net production decline rates in any given exporting country. For example, The UK's portion of the North Sea oil fields may be showing a nine percent annual decline for the past couple of years. But it's export capacity has declined 60 percent. Something similar is in store for Saudi Arabia, Russia, Mexico, Venezuela -- in short, the whole cast of characters in the export world. They are all producing less and they are all using more of their own oil, and have less to send elsewhere.

Thanks for the link Largely... bug-ger :(

"The collateral underlying this load of hallucinated "wealth" is comprised of contracts made by the insolvent for suburban houses worth far less than the value stated on the contracts -- with every indication that the real value will keep dropping."

Double bug-ger :(

hopefully technology will pick up and we won't be so much dependant on oil.

I also think that if the need arises those new technologies will spring like mushrooms. I decided to install a solar panel in my house in Italy. Since I don't live there, I could actually SELL energy to the council and be in Credit with the electricity company. There are alternatives to Oil, the only reason they're not used is that converting the global economy from an Oil based one to an alternative one is too expensive. Time will tell (not Time, the user) :P

How do the solar panels get manufactured? How do the solar panels get to Italy? How do you get to and from Italy?

Time will indeed tell. Except that it it won't be much time and the telling will be uncomfortable to hear :(

As much as I enjoy doom mungering myself this "we may as well do nothing" crap is pathetic. Get the fook on with life every generation has it's problems oil has only been with us for about 120 years. I'm sure the human race will continue without it, we are kind of resourceful you know. It's going to be a bumpy ride but hell I'm game.

I'm sure it will... only with a population 99% smaller.

Indeed. If the peak oil claims are correct, then living without oil won't be a problem for the 10% of the population that survive the social collapse that would follow it... the other 90% who die might be a bit pissed off though.

The best hope is a global depression that cuts oil use dramatically for long enough to replace it with more viable long-term technologies. That way we may not have to see billions of people die.
