Upbeat factory data eases interest rate concerns

" Concerns about inflation and anything more than a modest increase in interest rates will have been eased by the data yesterday showing that while demand for UK manufactured goods had returned to the 12-year high reported in March, expectations of inflation have eased.

The CBI's latest Industrial Trends Survey, published yesterday, suggests that growth should continue to be robust, but inflationary pressures, it tentatively suggests, may be softening. That is in line with recent results from the major supermarket chains, which also seem to indicate a weakening of "pricing power" by businesses and shops, a key factor for the Bank of England.

In the CBI's June survey, 29 per cent of manufacturers reported that total orders were above normal, while 22 per cent said they were below. The rounded balance of +8 per cent is an improvement on the past two months and repeats March's 12-year peak (+8 per cent).

The strengthening in demand was helped by an improvement in export orders. Demand for consumer goods, such as electricals and food, was particularly strong. Exports, despite the strong pound, seem to be holding up. A balance of +16 per cent of firms expects to raise prices over the next three months, showing that pricing pressures persist, but have eased from May's 12-year high (+25 per cent)........"

I have 7 years worth of engineering qualifications including a 2:1 BEng from a red brick. If I looked for a manufacturing job I reckon it could take as much as 6 months to land one.

Yeah, we've never had it so good.

What are "UK manufactured goods" , not more boots please.

I searched on Google but nothing about what we manufacture.

We still have some UK manufacturers or UK manufacturing (in no particular order): Arcam, Hope, New Balance, BAe, Sony, Ford....

Look round your room though, and on your person, where's all that shite come from? Even Taiwan has lost production to China. There is increasingly a premium placed on non-Chinese made goods e.g. Seiko manufactures some of its watches in China and Japan. For the same watch model, the Japanese variant (designated with a J in the product code) commands a higher premium. Most of your PC was probably Chinese made.. though some Intel chips are coming out of places like Ireland...
