Bit like asking, how long is a bit of string. What do you want to do with it.

There are 2 issues as you seem to understand already, the domain name and then the actual hosting. There are loads of places offering cheap domain registration but personally I'd avoid those as in the longer run they are trouble, you really want to use the same company for both registration and domain.

There loads of providers out there and I have used a few, I have found wiserhosting to be pretty good on all levels, good price, good features and importantly good and responsive support. They are based in the UK so there is no lag in terms of getting support requests dealt with.

http://www.wiserhosting.com/

I have no interest in them other than a statisfied customer. The Webstart package is suitable for most things.

The thing to think about is that while you will be paying for this service you will get support and features you will not get on the "free" providers.

To give any further advice I think you need to give us at least some idea about what you want to do.

The idea is for a forum based site containing a database of esoteric technical information, that I have compiled over many years, pertaining to my profession. Free access and users will be able post their own experiences for the common good of all concerned. Ability to post video clips would be useful. That's it really.

To run forum software (such as this) you need some sort of database, many hosting accounts don't come with this so thats something you need to look out for, it will also need some form of programming language to handle the form so it needs support for PHP or similar.

Video clips would be your killer, if you mean linking to something like youtube then thats not a problem but allowing people to upload and view video clips on your site directly would basically eat up you bandwidth and diskspace quickly.

I assume you would also want emails, again some providers charge for this others don't, somebody like Easyspace for example look cheap but when you add all the component parts it gets pretty expensive.

Not wanting to over plug Wiserhosting but they have automated scripts for adding forums and other features to your site, just click a button and you are away. I'm sure others also do this but I can't speak for them.

I really appreciate your advice, gilf. Thanks.

I think I'll link to YouTube. Do Wiserhosting have design templates or is this something else I need to look into?

Just to add my two-pence worth.

It is in my experience a very good idea to choose separate companies for hosting,

and domain name control. Otherwise you'll find if your hosting company goes bad,

which they do time to time, you have a huge pain in the a$$ trying to get back control

of your domain, its also not uncommon to be charged a "release-fee" of ~£30.

Only smaller hosting companies bother with this scummy practice of release fees,

go with a provider that specialises in domain names and they will transfer the domain

elsewhere for free.

I currently use www.heartinternet.co.uk for domains, and they do very competitively priced

domain names, with a fully functional control panel.

They also have some pretty good looking hosting deals, but I would be completely contradicting

myself if I was to recommend them. I have also used www.idealhosting.co.uk in the past

and they were pretty reliable.

Personally I run my own servers, which gives me full flexibility with regards to installation &

configuration, plus none of the performance & reliability issues which can sometimes plague

shared hosting. Which is what most commercial hosting is.

If you want a kind of 'downloads' section.

Or if you want something very fast to update, simple and bloggy:

You can host it where you like. The USA's good value. Get at least 5 MySQL databases to be in the safe side and php. Get as much bandwidth as you can.

Also think if you want an anonymous domain. GoDaddy/DomainsByProxy do this.
