Stop and quiz powers considered

The government is considering giving police officers across the UK "stop and question" powers under new anti-terror laws, says the Home Office.

The proposal, allowing police to ask people about their identity and movement, is among measures being considered by Home Secretary John Reid.

The measure is so far used only in Northern Ireland.

Police elsewhere have to have "reasonable suspicion" a crime has been committed before they can stop people.

Anyone who refuses to co-operate could be charged with obstructing the police and fined up to £5,000, according to the Sunday Times.

"less party politics" and more about the concern "for national security".

John Reid is watching you!!!

Nearly every policy this Government comes up with is another hammer blow to our liberty and rights. This is nothing to do with terrorism, a terrorist will have his answers ready and prepared. It's about creating a culture of fear and anxiety amongst ordinary citizens. Reid has learnt a lot from his political hero.

the 'war on terror' is a hoax - it's designed to frighten people and make it easier to control them

there is no way they could introduce these new powers/systems without it

All this `war on terror` nonsense - I mean it was a shame, but only ~3000 perished in 9/11. Compare that to the millions who die every year through disease, poverty and starvation.

Some interesting statistics:

http://www.unitedjustice.com/death-statistics.html

More people by far are killed by flu or by road traffic accidents every year than by terrorists.

This is not unexpected as George Bush's poodle otherwise known as Prime Minister Tony Blair is copying events in the USA.

Google in "police state USA" most interesting

GW-Bush had the towers pulled and will pay for the 3000 one day but the people must turn back the facist police state from both sides of the line else we are all going to be stuffed big time.

Yep and the Met want half a dozen water Cannon @ 750K a piece, I've said it before and I'll say it again. In a Totalitarian State, the powers that be fear their citizens more so than the imaginary enemies they create for us to fear.

Oh dear who on earth would have thought that a socialist government would be afraid of the people they represent, and why they might be afraid is anyones guess.

Get with the programme, Socialism is about control, a begging workforce, and riches for the masters in power.

Smash the socialists at the next election, and give them such a bashing they are wiped from the planet en mass. Socialism/Communism has been the cause of many millions of deaths since the day they formed, get them out before they get you.

Having lived in Northern Ireland for my entire life I can tell you for certain that any fuss about this is silly. Some people seem to think that this sort of freedom to stop and question will suddenly mean they cannot live the life they are used to - that is total and complete dung. I have heard no complaints from those around me - if someone does get stopped and checked (which is incredibly rare), they say who they are, what they are doing on that is it. They dont go around complaining about it being a breach of their rights or accusing 'big brother' of watching.

Sometimes I just wish people could grow up and stop thinking the whole world is trying to pee over them.

we already have limted freedoms under democracy and they are being reduced continuously esp recently through engineered fear ie 'war on terror'

imo if you don't at least make try to make others aware then we will all sleepwalk into a nightmare that future generations are going to find hard to escape

Spot on. Harry S. Truman was advised that he'd have to put the fear of God into the public and that has been Western policy ever since.

But this particular issue is something really petty. Most people I know were not even aware that the situation was different in NI and the rest of the UK - it really is that unobtrusive.

Big Brother's watching: The secret CCTV bunker that monitors our every move

Last updated at 13:17pm on 1st June 2007

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/arti...70&ito=1490

We are sleepwalking towards a Big Brother society, not in one fell swoop but by stages," warns The Spectator, a conservative magazine.

"There is no boot stamping on a face: just an ever more insistent foot in the door."

But the vast majority of 4,000 people surveyed in 2005 said they believed that tapping phones, opening mail and following terror suspects were a price worth paying to stay safe, according to British Social Attitudes Report - an annual survey released in January.

Some 81 percent thought tapping telephones and opening mail were prices worth paying. For terrorism suspects, 80 percent supported electronic tagging.

The British seem to have rallied around the idea that some long-accepted freedoms may have to be curbed in the face of a common enemy - in much the way an earlier generation made sacrifices during World War II

nothing changes - except that the hoax 'war on terror' will never end - even wwii only lasted 6 years...

politicians want more control over the public, when are people going to realise this

but perhaps if we took better care of ourselves they wouldn't have as many excuses to put cameras up everywhere

we either voluntaritly submit to laws e.g. God's laws, or we turn God over and submit to man. The laws of man are more fearful since the more laws they make the more of our freedoms they take away. Let's fight the causes of crime i.e. the sinful heart, and not just mop up after.

FREEDOM

The police have been doing such stops for a long time. I've already been stopped a couple of times by police. It was very rural area and obviously they don't have much to do.

When I enquired why they had stopped me the said "Just a routine stop". Wanted my name, address what I was doing etc.

Now obviously that is ****** as there is no such thing as a routine stop. However I was polite and answered all their questions. Was sent on my way with a smile and a wave.

yep, your views seem to reflect the majority

according to the survey above (conducted in 2005?) most people are happy with the 'war on terror' hoax and the associated police state being built to control protect them

i can't imagine the power these people will have over our lives as these systems/technologies are developed over the coming years

frightening stuff and we are, as so many have said, sleepwalking into it....

FREEDOM

I thought that the British public had more fight in them - that they would instinctively react against summary justice, arbitrary law making, unconstrained power. But no. They've been a pushover. Think of Britain just 10 years ago. A genuinely free, liberal society with a clear and defined space between citizen and the State/authority. The justice system was cumbersome and frustrating but it was still a model for the world to copy. Now we stand on the brink of a total surveillance police state. Unbelievable and tragic.

Poor laureljon still believing there is choice in the options we are offered regards the two main political parties. They were both bought and paid for way back, hence you got Tory Clone Tony.

WE are a Client State, we have been since WW2, THE US MILITARY NEVER LEFT when the "war" was over. For a moment we believed we were a free nation, but the "Suez Invasion" soon brought the reality home to our political masters. Since that day we dare not so much as fart as a nation, without first getting the go a head from Washington. We get to chose our own tax collectors from a choice of two main political parties, and that's the reality of the situation.

My point was that they have been doing this for years so why all of a sudden do they need new powers?

Are people suddenly turning round to the Rozzers and saying "None of your business. You ain't got nothin' on me you slaaag!"?

The measure they want to introduce would make it illegal to withhold information about your identity and your movements i.e. where you have been and where you are going, when asked by police. It moves from being a civil-duty to becomming a legal obligation. Bear in mind that this is a measure which originates with the government and has NOT been asked for by the police.

A while ago the government publicly stated that when ID cards were introduced you wouldn’t have to carry them about with you and you definitely wouldn't be asked by the police to show it in the street.

My personal opinion is that this new measure will be used as a way to force people to carry ID cards. It is in the same spirit as 'you don't have to have an ID card...but you won't be able to get a job or go to the doctors if you don't'.
