This Is London: Tony Blair To Leave On May 31st.

'Tony Blair to leave on May 31st':

Tony Blair has sensationally caved in to pressure and named May 31 next year as the date for his resignation.

Downing Street let slip that he will announce his departure just weeks after his tenth anniversary as Premier, and walk out of Number 10 eight weeks later, on July 26.

But the news, leaked to the Labour-supporting Sun newspaper, left MPs baffled after it emerged that Gordon Brown has not been consulted.

'Leaked memo suggests how to package glorious farewell':

Downing Street has been left deeply embarrassed by the leak of secret plans for Tony Blair's final days in office, which suggest appearances on Blue Peter and Songs of Praise and photocalls outside 20 iconic buildings built since 1997.

A five-page memo by the Prime Minister's closest aides said that they were drawing up a "grid" for Mr Blair to bow out like a rock star. "He needs to go with the crowds wanting more. He should be the star who won't even play that last encore," it recommends. The document plunged a divided Labour Party farther into crisis, with activists balking at a "Soviet-style" glorification and others fearing that attempts to "spin" his exit would backfire.

The document is also likely to anger Gordon Brown for suggesting that the Chancellor may try to sabotage the Prime Minister's legacy. "There are specific issues which can provide opportunities and threats. They are: GB's reaction . . . the more successful we are the more it will agitate and possibly destabilise him, we need to consider how to deal."

More reason for Brown to keep it up  he will get desperate now

Brown will go to any lengths now to try and mask the economic problems. I can imagine he is putting pressure on government departments to delay announcements of cutbacks, etc. until July next year at the earliest. He thought he would 'inherit' the PM job, but it looks like there may be other candidates. The last thing he needs right now is a HPC...

... Which is exactly why we are praying for one before Christmas!!

Quite a send off tour is being staged. How much will the tickets be? I believe they are starting with 'Things Can Only Get Better', not sure what track they are finishing with but I know you wont able to drink or smoke in the stadia and no burger stalls allowed.

T-shirts and other merchandise will be available on the day.

I wish the media would let it rest.

I don't give a toss about when, how or why Blair goes. It's bad enough that he's still breathing air.

Surely, the most important fact is that he's f***ed up this country beyond recognition, and he deserves to be put on trial
