Old People Abroad

Retired to spain for a better life?

Sold your house for a fortune?

You've suddenly discovered you can't get carers allowance so you need to work out who'll look after you. Enterprising Brits are setting up businesses to look after them.

If their only asset is the house they bought over there and it needs selling to pay for their care then is that fair? Same as it would be here.

Should we pay for them to have carers allowance over there?

In Spain it is the culture to look after their own so there aren't enough homes anyway.

The BBC is doing a story saying you're entitled to get what the locals get - which is nothing. So why should Britons abroad expect it all?

Another annoying story about a generation who've got the cash to go and have a life abroad in their retirement but who are cheesed off if they have to pay for their care.

Here you have a bunch of people who just haven't thought it through. They went to Spain on package holidays for years and thought everything would be just like home. Bad news, there is this little thing called culture that differs between here and Spain. As you rightly pointed out, the mediterranean cultures are more family oriented and much more likely to invite granny and grandad to move in with them (or move in with granny and grandad).

Why didn't these Brits people just downsize to a flat in the UK (or sell some equity) and use the money to finance long winter breaks in Spain/Italy, etc. Some of the winter prices in the resorts are cheaper than paying the heating bills!? Greed perhaps?

Crook 'O' Lune Holiday Park.. is just for such people who want to keep a base in the UK. (And its got a memorial forest for if you die there!

http://www.lifeforalife.org.uk/planting_ar...rook_o_lune.pdf )

You've got to spend 6 months back here before you get a home or carers allowance. The visible shudderings of the daughter as she considers having to share her space with her dad for 6 months.

I've heard that the Spanish health services have announced that they will refuse to consult or treat any Brits who aren't competant in Spanish, unless they are accompanied by a personal translator. Brits who are too lazy to learn the local language have been costing the Spanish dearly in translators fees and longer consultation times, and the Spanish have had enough of it.

Looks like a big opportunity for translation work for any priced-out bilingual Spanish/British FTBers with a good medical vocabulary. I expect they'll form a cartel and charge 3 times the going rate. Looks like some ageing boomers are just going to have to lower their expectations. :D

Well done to the Spanish. At least they have the balls to stand up for their "own". My folks keep tinkering with the idea of buying in Spain. Don't speak a damn word of Spanish, then have a go at the Immigrants here for not speaking english.

All pots and kettle innit!

Excellent. Nice to see one government stand up for their own people over foreigners.

I was surprised this morning to hear some guys at work, homeowners with comfortable jobs and no interest in HPC, comment on how this article on the BBC is obviously government propaganda to discourage the discontented from moving abroad. That hadn't occurred to me. These are guys are feeling the rising cost of things and are getting p*ssed off themselves now.
