Spending on spin trebles under Blair

By Graeme Wilson, Political Correspondent
(Filed: 30/08/2006)
Spending on Government spin has trebled under Labour and taxpayers are now supporting an army of more than 3,200 press officers.
The dramatic expansion of the Whitehall press machine under Tony Blair is laid bare in official figures obtained by the Conservatives.
A total of 1,815 press officers and other public relations staff works in Whitehall departments.
John Prescott, the Deputy Prime Minister, has three press officers, despite no longer having a department.
"Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and their army of quangocrats have bankrolled a bloated army of spin doctors, politicising the Civil Service and creating a corrosive culture of spin in Whitehall."
The Central Office of Information defended the increased spending, saying that Labour was "a radical and reforming Government" and that it had a duty to explain its policies, decisions and actions and to inform members of the public about their rights and liabilities.

John needs more of everything because he's important... more Jags, more grace and favour residences and now more press officers.

Maybe we should create the post of Prime Minister/ Chancellor of the Exchequer and install John Prescott as head honcho.

At least we would be guaranteed idle inactivity which would save this country billions.

When Socialists start thinking, the cost is not only the money of citizens but their lives also.

Labour hasn't really changed from the inflation mad days of the 70's - they've just got better at handing the PR...

It just shows how deceitful our government is. Just think how many of those thousands are under instruction to post under BBC 'have your say', article comments and internet forums when they have a spare 30mins.

All part of creating a "balance of opinions"

Where did you get the figure of 300 in 1997 from RB? The BBC website reports a threfold increase which would suggest over 1000 in 1997.

As a central player in the government spin machine, I'd expect the BBC to report the facts with a "different angle". The 300 figure comes from a leaked government report.

When Labour came to power in 1997, just over 300 fully-fledged press officers were working in Whitehall, although that figure excluded a small number of other public relations staff.

Not mentioned in the BBC report?
