Germans Leave in Record Numbers, Fleeing Unemployment (Update1)

By Rainer Buergin

Aug. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Thomas Koerber, an engineering technician from Viernheim, Germany, was looking for a new job. He found it -- 4,700 miles away, in Canada.
``I looked around, found a job I liked in Canada, and left Germany within two months,'' Koerber, 39, said in a telephone interview from Calgary. ``If I can get a better job abroad, and if I'm being treated better, I'm gone.''
Koerber is one of 145,000 Germans who fled the fatherland last year amid record postwar unemployment, pushing emigration to its highest level since 1954, Federal Statistics Office figures show. Last year was also the first since the late 1960s that emigrants outnumbered Germans returning home from living abroad, the statistics office said.
``People say things aren't getting better in Germany, and nothing's going to change any time soon,'' said historian Simone Eick, director of the German Emigration Center in the northern port city of Bremerhaven. Indeed, ``some indicators suggest that this may be the start of mass emigration.''
`No Future' ..../
Today's emigrants are more likely to choose Canada, New Zealand and Australia, or, within Europe, Switzerland, Austria and the Netherlands.
An estimated 2,300 German doctors are working in Switzerland, more than 8 percent of the Swiss total, said the Bern-based FMH Swiss Medical Association.

If Germany has such a perception what on earth are our younger generation thinking with Gordon having dumped HPI and rising unemployment on them? "No future" may be right despite Gordon's canny tricks. Note that not many Germans want to come to HPI land.

Just out of interest, to which country are you intending to emigrate?

You can bet that numbers pretty close to the truth - Nobody really knows the number of Britons that leave every year.

That reminds me, I’ve been planning on visiting the ‘Bremerhaven Emigration museum’ for a while now. It’s about the history of German emigration (mainly to the Americas) - looks interesting.

Germans University leavers tend to have excellent English and world class qualifications, however German doctors get relatively low play in their home country (probably because there are so many of them :P ). Recent documentary on German TV (didn’t get to see it myself) followed a group of German doctors who moved to the UK (for substantially more money) and spent most of their time shaking their heads at the terrible state of the NHS.

Moral of the story, different countries will be better for different people/professions at different times. In today’s “globalized” world you can act like a corporation and move to where the costs/benefits are most preferable.

I think this is right. If you want to buy a house or conduct business go somewhere else other than hyper-inflated UK.
