German Investor Confidence Plummets

Tuesday August 22, 10:25 am ET

By Geir Moulson, Associated Press Writer
BERLIN (AP) -- German investor confidence fell to its lowest level in more than five years this month, pointing to the risk of a "considerable economic downturn" in the near future, a leading institute said in a survey released Tuesday.
The ZEW institute's index, a closely watched indicator in Europe's biggest economy, dropped for the seventh straight month on fears that exports will be hit by a
strong euro and a slower U.S. economy
, while tax hikes and high oil prices may dampen spending at home.

With the US likely to go into recession this side of winter the sneeze will, once again, turn out to be a dose of flu this side of the water. Its 1987-89 back again. HPC is getting closer by the minute. Sterling? :o

Bear week shaping ujp nicely so far. :)

Yup, if Germany goes into recession along with the US that's our 2 largest trading partners buying less goods from us. We are dead in the water folks. :o

Many in the EZ think its a false start. Hence the German confidence levels plummeting. The fundamentals are all against them: overvalued Euro, rising IR, stagflated economy, oil, slowing US export market.

Doesn't seem to have harmed the recent employment figures or economic growth rate. I'd put that down to perennial German pessimism - I should know, I've got three of them visiting me at the moment!
