Putin Sets Affordable Housing As One Of His Four

Recommended Posts

MOSCOW Russian prosecutors have ordered a probe of suspected price fixing by building companies in Moscow and St. Petersburg as property prices soar to records in the longest boom since the fall of the Soviet Union.

President Vladimir Putin, 53, has set affordable housing as one of his four national projects aimed at raising living standards. He has charged Dmitry Medvedev, 40, first deputy prime minister, with implementing the project.

Medvedev, a close Putin ally who some see as a possible successor, has complained about price manipulation on the housing market and accused officials of dragging their feet on implementing the project.

Prosecutors said "unjustifiably high housing prices" in Moscow, greater Moscow and St Petersburg were impeding the implementation of affordable housing.
