Irish Inflation Surges To 4.2%

Property prices and fuel costs push Irish inflation

Inflation in Ireland last month reached
a three-year high of 4.2%
, the government's Central Statistics Office reported yesterday.
The rise from the June rate of 3.9% surprised economists, who had forecast a slight gain to 4%. The report cited the international surge in the cost of fuel, and the galloping property market at home, as the key factors for the jump – the highest rate since 4.3% in April 2003.
It said the
combined cost of housing
, vehicle fuels and utilities in Ireland rose 16.5% over the previous 12 months,
