The concept of not being able to afford to live where you grew up changes from:

Can't affod to buy a home in the village/town/city you grew up in

to

Can't afford to buy a home in the country you grew up in?

Given housing costs, cost of living inflation and the latest comments about council tax, how long before the only people left in the UK are those who get everything on a plate from the government? It just doesn't pay to work anymore.

Strictly speaking, of course, that is an impossible situation. What it points to, though, is that the more productive and law-abiding people emigrate, the greater the tax and social burden on those remaining to bolster the chavs who will also be increasing in % of the pop. due to higher birthrate 'cos they can afford to have children w/o having to worry about housing for decades first.

In other words, it's positive feedback in a toboggan race to the bottom. "Past results are no guarantee of future performance." Unless something massive and drastic is done, the time will come when the rate of deterioration will suddenly far greater than the already tangible rate we experience today.

I envisage a Mad Max scenario in the not to distant future.

I'm trying to figure out how to fit a supercharged V-8 into my Escort. Maybe I'll start small and paint it black first.

It's the way welfare states always end: they're abused by the unproductive until they're unaffordable and the productive either go on strike or leave.

The next twenty to thirty years is going to be a pretty exciting time to be alive, though for all the wrong reasons.

Had enough time on holiday to read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. It basically describes just what you've written

I'm sure if you pop down to the local supermarket carpark at about 11pm on a weekend there will be plenty of chavs that can give you some pointers.

When you sit back and think about it, Gordon's Miracle Economy has done no one no good no-how. The man and his policies are an unmitigated disaster.
