Warning: Housepricecrash.co.uk Support Spammers

Recommended Posts

Dear Readers

I am dissappointed to report that this site passes on the email addresses of its registered users to spam lists.

For many years now, in an attempt to control the mountains of email spam that I receive and to know its origin, I have implemented an email tracking system. This involves using email addresses where they are required in registrations etc of a certain format ie different for each organisation involved.

In the case of housepricecrash.co.uk, I completed the web form on the 5th December 2005. Thus the email address I registered was:

origin.housepricecrash051205@mydomain.

As you can see, 8 months have elapsed since I signed up at the site - I believe it was for a competition or survey or similar. All of a sudden in the last month or so I have started to receive spam messages to this address, including two today. I have copied one of the headers as an example below (my exact details replaced with * for privacy). I apoligise for its obscene nature, but similarly I do not welcome the reciept of such material.

I am not a militant person but was has provoked this statement is that I emailed housepricecrash.co.uk to report this matter last week. This is shown below:

Subject: E-mail abuse

Housepricecrash.co.uk

To whom it may concern

I note you have passed the email address which I registered with yourselves to a third party spamming organisation. I am very annoyed by this. You have breached your privacy policy on this matter.

Please explain your reasons for this before I consider legal action or getting you added to Spam blacklists.

The email address I registered was:

origin.housepricecrash.co.uk051205@********

I can provide a copy of the Spam email I received today if requested.

Mr *********

-----------------------------------

Needless to say they have ignored this letter. They are probably shocked that their complicity with spammers has been rumbled by my tracking. I expect people normally register with their usual email address. Unfortunately this will not allow them to easily identify the source of future spam emails.

I expect that the administrators will delete this thread in time out of embarrassment. In the mean time, I recommend you avoid registering your main email address on this site if you wish to avoid extra spam. If the owners of this site wish to contact me in regard of this matter I would welcome such correspondence, along with an explanation of their abuse of my privacy.

Thank you.

I joined the forum after the hack and the day after registration received the first spam emails I have ever had. I'm sure this is not coincidence so can only assume that either Rich is correct or that the security of the site's database continues to be compromised

OK we're going to run some tests to see if this is actually the case.

Well I've not had any spam on my email address I used to register here and even if I ever did, I'd not make quite the song and dance about it that you did.

On my regular email address I get a daily input of emails trying to sell me Viagra which I don't need :D , lengthen the willy I don't have  , and loan me money I don't want :o , but it's nothing to do with this place. Use a filter and get on with life. B)

For pete's sake, it seems people want everything on the net for nothing. They join a site where they can access some of the best fiscal knowledge in the uk for free and then winge about how they have been abused by spamming hackers or in other cases, because the site has some advertising. No recognition or thanks for the costs and efforts of the webmasters in setting up the forum, creating the content in other areas of the site, and associated bandwidth/hosting charges. Sums up the great unwashed British public - fecking ungreatful pillocks

Thank you to the administrators for having the integrity to retain this thread and not delete it. I was unaware of the thread to which webmaster referred, but now realise that I was not the only one to suffer this inconvenience following the site hack.

Spam is very very annoying but it now seems reasonable to assume this was not due to a deliberate act on housepricecrash's part. I would stop using e-mail, but for the 2 or 3 genuine important ones I receive each day, amongst the hundreds of Spams.

Thank you Tuffers for supporting my observation. Othello I seem to recall registering my email address for a competition of this site. This is why I have not posted and just read threads up to now. Dog and Flatnose's comments are purile and I won't waste any further time responding.

For the benefit of other readers monitoring the effects, I have now received about 6 spams to the email address concerned in the last week.
