Seat Leon, had one for a couple of years (until I upgraded to an Altea). Based on the Golf/A3 but much cheaper but the same overall quality (mine and many motoring journolists opinion). I'm 6'3" and big (20 stone +) and it was plenty big enough for me.

Just did a search on the Seat site and came up with this one which seems to fit the bill (but there are plenty of others of a similar price/spec) ....

Gilf,

Looks good, but I'm looking for something with a 1.8/2.0L engine really. Needs a bit of oomph!!

A few ideas:

Skoda Octavia -- decent VW engines, well put together

Mazda 6 -- awesome reliability, bit more expensive to fix if it actually goes wrong :)

Skoda comes out on top in pretty much any comparison/competition.

Just like a VW only better.

Should be able to get the Leon 1.8 Turbo for under £6,000; 180bhp ought to do the trick although the ride might be a bit less comfy as a sporty model.

Best places to look are Auto Trader website & parkers.co.uk

Worth considering is Ford Focus (2.0 Ghia) from 2003 or perhaps if your willing to go a bit older and a bit higher mileage a 1999 BMW 3 series or similar Audi A4.

BMW 325 Turbo Diesel. Very robust engine, good looking car, fast enough with a good enough chassis to be entertaining when you want it to be, and will always hold a level of value.

Buy it right, and in a years time you could sell it for what you pay for it, or even more. Treat the paint with some Zymol and it will sell without issue.

Highly recommended.
