EADS threatens to slash UK jobs unless state support rises

By Roland Gribben

(Filed: 17/07/2006)

A split is emerging between the Government and EADS, the Airbus parent, over a package of measures aimed at reinforcing the group's investment in the UK.
The struggling Franco-German company is offering to increase investment and jobs in return for defence contracts, but warned yesterday that it may be forced to rundown its space operations in Britain unless the Government increases its space spending by £50m.
......./
Mr Darling, worried by the end of the direct British investment in Airbus, is anxious to head off the
risk of Airbus moving business out of Britain and wants to protect the jobs of the 13,000 workers
making wings and other parts at plants at Filton, Bristol, and Broughton, North Wales.

Can Gordon "afford" another 50m with its deficit already running out of control? Or, with this just be another victim of the Miracle Economy where jobs are shipped overseas and replaced by more borrowing?

It would be a terrible shame if the UK loses this Airbus contract

I work for a large UK manufacturing company (US owned) and it is terrifying how inefficient it is. I think it's too late to shake UK manufacturing out of it's apathy and denial. We will be further reduced to a nation of sandwich makers and hairdressers.

This is a rerun of the 70's. The government have lost a million jobs in industry. Profitable industries are being driven from our shores with high taxes and red tape whilst state subsidised industries are demanding ever larger subsidies.
