Interesting...

"Trade minister Ian McCartney announced..."

McCartney is minister of trade at the Foreign Office. Why are they getting an FCO minister to do something that should be under the ministry of trade and industry?

All b0llocks. In the 80s when financial advisers (sic) joined self regulatory organisations it didn't stop financial thuggery.

In the 90s after the Securities and Investments Board was set up to regulate everything it didn't stop financial thuggery.

The current policeman - The Financial Services Authority - finally has teeth but it came about 13 years after the SIB which was a joke. It'll be the 2020s before EAs are regulated properly.

we shall have to see what is in the Bill.

Hopefully, these past experiences will have been learnt from - and the regulation will be done properly from the off this time.

"Victims of unscrupulous agents may be compensated under the proposals. "

this is probably the real reason for regulating the EA's - it opens the doors to a flood of 'mis-selling' complaints when the crash comes.

that way the government can pass the blame for the crash on the 'unscrupuolous' estate agents

He's in a role that straddles both the DTI and the FCO - previously due to the export promotion side of the job
