Hopes began to be dashed when vast amounts of the production plant were transferred to China."
jonewer
Im just waiting for Jaguar and Aston to follow suit. Already, Rolls Royce and Bentley are basically German made cars. Even the leather on the seats of the new RR is German.
gasket37
sorry can't seem to do a direct link but if you go to http://www.austin-rover.co.uk/ and then click on lastest updates on the left and then scroll to the updates of 12.07.06 it appears that **some** cars will be made in longbridge. "MG vehicles will not only be built in Nanjing, China, (NAC’s home), but also at the Longbridge assembly plant near Birmingham, England and at a new American assembly plant to be built at the Ardmore Air Park in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Headquarters for MG sales, marketing and distribution (outside of Asia) will be located in Oklahoma City. Research and development will be in Norman at the University of Oklahoma." The headquarters bit and the R&D being in the US is bad news though, obviously
sikejsudjek
If anyone saw Midlands local tv last night there was a rather illuminating bit of video of a rather obnoxious American executive talking to Oaklahoma businessmen about how great it was that they have been able to get the good bit of the company (the name) and got rid of the bad stuff (pensions, UK employees). Looks like another bit of our industry is being asset stripped. He even looked a bit like an older Michael Douglas... Only the old model will be built in Britan, the new stuff is going to the US according to the tv report.
