Climate change and the
highly competitve global market are main challenges for UK employers
, says CBI chief
03 July 2006 10:49
UK employers face two major international challenges: climate change and the increasingly competitive global economy, according to the CBI's new director-general Richard Lambert.

High house prices require high wages and high wages send jobs overseas. :(

Up to 1,000 jobs go in industry shake-ups

By Miles Costello

As many as
1,000 British jobs were lost today as AB Foods,
the owner of British Sugar, unveiled plans to shut two factories and Imerys of France said it would scale back operations in south-west England.
AB Foods is to shut two sugar beet factories in York and Allscott and "consolidate processing" at its remaining four plants in the UK.
The consumer goods group said its decision followed similar measures taken in Poland last year in which it collapsed its activities into two factories.
The UK move, expected to result in 200 job losses, comes as the group battles to cut costs and improve efficiency ahead of the introduction of a new Europe-wide sugar regime.

Clay firm cuts 'will hit economy'

Imerys - The company said it was consolidating its operations

Plans to cut 800 jobs in Devon and Cornwall as part of a china clay firm's reorganisation will hit the entire South West economy, MPs and unions say.

Imerys said the changes were necessary to protect the future of its business.

It is blaming high energy prices, a weak dollar and strong overseas competition for significant losses.

More than 700 jobs will go in Cornwall as Imerys consolidates its operations. Up to 85 jobs will go in Devon as the company closes its pit at Lee Moor.

The 800 redundancies amount to almost half of the French company's 2,000-strong workforce in the region. It is Cornwall's largest private employer.

Some of the current operations carried out in Cornwall will be moved to Brazil.
