Inflation Accelerates In The Eurozone

Consumer-price inflation in the 12 nation region quickened to the fastest pace since October, after reports yesterday showed French consumer prices in May rose at the fastest pace since September and Italian inflation matched the quickest since November. Futures traders added to bets the European Central Bank will raise interest rates twice more this year.

``The economy seems to be growing at a moderate pace, and inflation is still stubbornly above 2 percent,'' said Nick Stamenkovic, a fixed-income strategist at RIA Capital Markets in Edinburgh. ``I'm penciling the next rate hike to be in August.''

The next rate rise will almost certainly come ahead of the normal three month interval. The first three rate rises have had no effect on Ireland and Spain - the next three will though.

With a general election coming in 07 for Ireland, I am expecting government politicians to start complaining soon - "It's not us see, it's the ECB that's the problem", then we will know the game is up.
