Guardian: Public Sector Payfreeze

Recommended Posts

Newsnight just had an interesting piece. They reported that the Guardian will announce Gorden is going to announce a public sector pay freeze. Also, David Cameron is about to announce that public sector workers are great, Tory's just love them and want to get out of their hair to do the great job that they do.

It's so amusing, because the Tory's want to sort out the mess of the public sector, but they have to promise to like them to get elected. Gordon loves the public sector, but has to be seen to be tough with them to get elected.

I do work in the public sector - and it is a bit of a mess, but I honestly can't see how it can be easily reformed. I guess it's all about having the right incentive structures, applied with a long term view rather than constant meddling. It probably should include being able to sack people more easily. I'm not sure if you would want to apply pure market economics to every aspect of current public sector work.

Anyway, I just finished reading "The Undercover Economist", which I thought was fascinating. Are there any other good books on economics anyone knows about?
