Where Best To Invest

Recommended Posts

Remember that stupid Krusty and Muppet show - Where best to invest"?

My query...

"Sir / Madam

I am writing to complain about the above programme that was on tonight.

My primary problem was with the independent predictions on what could happen to prices in the areas -

(1) What was the source of the independent predictions?

(2) What assumptions were made in arriving at the predictions?

(3) What process was gone through in arriving at the predictions?

(4) Why was there no mention of how big the deposits needed would be (30% on the £300k house in Oxford at the end by my calculations)

(5) Why was there no discussion about the investment decision process?

You can't make an investment decision on the basis of an independent prediction (source unknown) saying prices will rise 50% in 5 years.

What assumptions are being made about wages and rents in that time to

justify that rise? 25 Oxford educated PMs is not a reason to invest -

in fact it as likely to be a reason not too as the area is clearly already well known and a "trophy" investment.

Absolute drivel.

Regards etc"

Their response...

"Thanks for your email James. In Selling Houses homeowners pay between one and two percent of the value of their properties towards the makeover of the house. In this case it was roughly one and half per cent, £3,000, which covered all the materials, supplies and basic labour for the makeover. The design and some specialist labour is provided by the production company to facilitate participation in the programme by potential vendors."

My reply...

"An interesting response, but perhaps the better response would be one that referred to the programme I was taliking about... "Where Best To Invest".

I refer you to my points below.

Regards etc"

FFS, why do we bother!

EDIT -just to be clear - I put the programme title in the email subject header!

Their response seems pretty appropriate, in a way, given that what you were complaining about was complete disregard for detail and the nitty-gritty! Airheads.

Well done to you for writing the letter, anyway, even if it was like throwing a pea against a wall (a handy Russian expression that I'm very fond of - you can only use it when you're writing, though, otherwise people think you're talking about peeing against a wall).

:)

I just remembered I emailed them after that programme too. I haven't had a response (yet).

I'll follow it up and let you know how I get on.

If I get a reply like those above, I'll be making a complaint. My initial email was worded as an enquiry, rather than a complaint.

I made a complaint to OFFTWAT about poor service I received from an escort agency, they just laughed and said that they'd release the pictures onto the Internet if I didn't shut up.

It is a response I would expect from C4. I hold them in even lower regard than the BBC. Good effort though FF for challenging them.

Well a few weeks back I complained about the reply bearing no relation to my original complaint, and they have responded:

Many thanks for your email regarding WHERE BEST TO INVEST. Firstly let

me apologise for the inaccurate response to your original email. We

were sorry to read that you felt the programme was 'ramping an already

obscene market for the rich'. I must point out, however, that property

investment is no longer a business purely for the rich. People from all

walks of life decide to give up their jobs to pursue it as a career.

Indeed, this programme was not aimed at the rich, who do not need to worry

about hunting good deals, but ordinary people who might wish to invest

for their futures. Nonetheless I have made a log of your comments and

passed them on to the producers so that they are aware of how you feel.

Once again, many thanks for taking the time to contact us. We value all

our viewers' feedback be it negative or positive.

Don't you just love it when they just pass your complaint onto the swines you are complaining about, acting like its some kind of positive action

Cue image of producers of the Muppet Show with Kirstie the Frog & Miss Phillie laughing while binning your complaint <_<

I got a reply from Ofcom, and they have written to channel 4 regarding my complaint. They found that there was no wrong doing on their behalf, and they are taking it no further.
